Chapter Eight

Today is the day of the annual Mystic Falls carnival that the high school puts on for the whole town to enjoy, just to Maddie's luck Elena and Caroline had suckered her into helping run the entire thing. She couldn't' say no to her friends, though she was nervous to experience her first-ever carnival (which she had only seen in romance movies). Stefan assured her that real life is nothing like the cheesy romance movies she binges every Sunday, this was a 'normal' event that 'normal' teenagers go to and he begged her to try and lighten up so she could have fun. However nothing was normal in the world of the Salvatore siblings, Damon was trying to figure out why in the hell Katherine had returned back after all these years, Elena was trying to fix things with Bonnie after opening the tomb killed her Grams, and Maddie was trying to figure out how to function as a teen when in reality she was 164 years old. It was all a mess, but Elena wanted everything to be low-key and happy for at least one day and Maddie couldn't say she disagreed after learning about everything they'd gone through even before she awoke. 

"Katherine looked just like you it was freakish" Bonnie says leaning against the trailer as Maddie and Elena try to sort out the prizes on her clipboard

"she is my ancestor"

"your vampire ancestor and she didn't just resemble you she was you"

"Katherine was always one for tricks, if she wants to be you Elena she will be" Maddie comments earning a glare from Bonnie and a worried glance from Elena

"sorry I'm still working on my filter" she apologizes 

"how do you know she's not still out there pretending to be you?" Bonnie asks

"I don't, but I could sit here and be tortured by her, or I could go take these prizes to the ring toss" 

"are you worried about Damon since he tried to kill Jeremy?" Bonnie asks, Maddie's head shoots up and everything clicks into place, she was wondering why her friend had been so upset with him. She hated when her brothers and friends decided to keep her out of things, it made her feel like such a child. 

"I don't want to think about Damon, I'm human and I have to do human stuff otherwise I'm gonna go crazy" 

"That sounds good to me Lena now lets go get these to ring toss" Maddie says wrapping her arm around her friends sending Bonnie one last smile before they walk-off

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you" 

"you don't have to keep things from me just because they're concerning my brothers, I know of vampires in fact I'm very familiar with them" Maddie says 

"technically I'm not supposed to tell you this but Stefan made me promise to keep you out of the supernatural stuff, he wants you safe"

"ahh my brother always trying to be my savior, the truth is I am not safe no matter how much or how little information I have about the supernatural world, the blood running through my veins puts me at risk every day so I'd appreciate being included"

"you might wanna call a family meeting for that one" Elena comments causing Maddie to giggle

"lets go we have to make Caroline proud, she'd kill us if we messed this up while she was in the hospital"

"the speakers in the ring toss are down" Elena says as the trio walks through the carnival quickly
