(a/n) before we start I have no idea what time name Reader's brother because I'm bad at names and I also didn't want to overthink an OC name, so he will be referred to as "J" thanks :-)

I served Reiner and I a cup of hot tea before he started to tell me about my brother.

I could tell that he was nervous because his voice was cracking like a teenage boy. It was kinda funny.

"I don't remember what your brother's name was, but I knew he used a fake one when he was living on the island. Can I just call him J?"

"Yes, J is fine."

"I don't know all the details about how he was spared his life. What I do know is that he was being taken care of by a man named Grisha Jaeger. He was Zeke and Eren Jaeger's father."

"What a small world."

"Yeah, ha. It really is."

Reiner took a sip of his tea and continued.

"From what I was told, he was working as Mr. Jaeger's apprentice in medicine. Your brother lived with his family and from then on he grew a close bond with them. He made a promise to Mr. Jaeger that he would watch after Eren and their adoptive daughter Mikasa, if anything were to happen."

"So, he had another family. That sounds nice."

I couldn't help but feel a little jealous. I'd always wanted a family to care for me as I care for them.

"Years after Wall Maria fell, they all joined the Survey Corps together. This was the place where we all met. I didn't know who he was or anything about him. That was until Annie pointed out that he was part of the (L/N) family. Your families were close, so it was only a matter of time until his cover was blown."

"I had forgotten about the Leonhart's relationship with my parents. They were good friends up until they were caught. Annie and I were never close at all. You guys didn't hurt him for this right?"

"Well- not exactly. Annie wasn't too happy with what he was doing because she didn't understand. Annie wanted answers about how he was still alive as a human, but he kept his mouth shut to protect Eren and Mikasa. She beat him to a pulp."

I winced at that thought.

"J promised to protect those two until the day he died and that's exactly what he did."

"What do you mean? Why did you use past tense?" I swallowed and felt the tight knot in my throat. I knew what he was going to say.

"Well, when Annie turned into the Female Titan and attacked the Survey Corps, your brother had unfortunately lost his life while he was trying to protect Eren from being captured. He knew what our objective was and he made sure it didn't go through. I don't blame him. He was angry with Marley."

I slowly felt tears stream down my face. I had been feeling the same resentment my brother did about Marley.

I understood now what I needed to do.

I need to protect the people on Paradis because no one else will.

"Your brother didn't die for nothing, he was a great comrade. He laid down his life for our friends and I could never thank him enough."

"What do you mean our friends, Reiner? You were there with an objective to retrieve the Founding and you killed those people in doing so. You weren't protecting them."

His face grew cold and his emotions were flushed.

Then suddenly, he looked at me like he was a whole different person.
