Y/n's POV:
"It's not that icy on the roads. We'll be fine."
Emergency rooms
Painfully bright lights
Searing pain
"Miss Y/n. Miss Y/n," Mr. Roberts wakes me up from my sleep. This was the third time I had fallen asleep in his class this week. I mumble an apology while a few people snicker. My cheeks burn. It wasn't my fault Mr. Roberts has a voice that makes me want to rip my ears out. My only resort is to sleep.
"Now. As I was saying." I stop listening to him right there. Mr. Robert is the oldest teacher here and gives all the girls bad grades as if it's the 1800s.
My closest and practically my only friend, Rachel, sits across the aisle from me. I rip a piece of paper out of my notebook and write a note to her. I fold it and toss it over to her desk. Rachel was fervently writing notes, still determined to get an A in this class. She stops and takes the note, eyeing Roberts. She snorts and I smile at her as she reads it. She tosses her blonde hair behind her and begins to write something back.
"I'm sorry am I interrupting you two?" Mr. Roberts asks. I look up startled, not realizing he had come over to us. Rachel quickly gives the note to me.
"No sir. I apologize sir." God, she's such a suck up. I usually am as well, but not with him. Mr. Roberts jaw clenched. He never has been intimidating. He is a short, portly man who is practically bald except for a few wisps of white hair.
He adjusts his large glasses and puts up his hand for the note. My knee begins to bounce and I sweat a little. I felt like a guilty child. I hold out the note and he tries to pull it away, but it is stuck like glue to my fingers. He glares at me and tries to pull it away. My classmates begin to laugh. Rachel leans over, her green eyes boring into mine.
"Y/n, just give it to him." I open up my mouth to say something but am immediately interrupted by him.
"Miss L/n, I would listen to your friend before I send you to the office." Dammit. Why can't I let go? I try to pull away at the same time he pulls, making him slip and almost fall onto Rachel's desk. I gasp and others laugh harder. He stands up and huffs.
"That's it. Go to the office. Both of you." I look down at the note still stuck on my fingers. Rachel pales and I stand, pulling her with me.
As we walk down the hallway, tears well up in Rachel's eyes. Before the accident, I would be sobbing over this too. Now, I haven't cried since the funeral.
We sit on the bench outside of the office, waiting for Principal Keegan to come out and talk to us. As I begin to relax a little, the note finally unsticks from my fingers. I hold up the note and show it to Rachel. I laugh, and she doesn't.
"Hey! It unstuck!" I say happily, trying to make her feel better. She wipes her eyes, making her mascara run.
"Why didn't you just give him the note?" I lean my head against the wall behind me and sigh.
"Well for one, it was literally stuck to my fingers-"
"You're lying. How could the note just stick?" She interrupts me. I hate being interrupted and she knows that.
"I don't know! It's-its hard to explain. It's been happening a lot lately, especially when I get stressed. And two, Carl Roberts is a misogynistic prick and doesn't deserve to see my artwork." She tries to quiet me after I say prick, but I shrug and unfold the note. Rachel laughs against her will.
The note said "What a Sexist Pig." And had an intricate drawing of a pig-human, strikingly resembling Carl, drawn my me.
"God Y/n. Keegan isn't going to believe it was just stuck on your fingers."
And she was right. Principal Keegan is the complete opposite of Carl. She has her black hair tied in a bun with a pencil sticking through it. She is the youngest principal I've ever had, and was used to seeing me in her office. When I walk in, she doesn't look up from her Micheal Jordan bobble head that is sitting on her desk. When Rachel walks in sheepishly behind me, she eyes her surprised.
"Well, this is a first Rach. I didn't think to ever see you in my office except for Student Council." She says, leaning back in her chair. She taps her green acrylic nails against her desk, waiting for an explanation.
"Principal Keegan, I take full responsibility for my actions. I'll take Rachel's punishments." I tell her and her eyes narrow suspiciously at me.
"W-will this be on my permanent record?" Rachel sniffs. I scoff at her and lean back in my chair. I've found if I act more calm, then Rachel will relax a little bit. Inside, I truly am freaking out. Keegan doesn't intimidate me, but my mom would be disappointed in me if I came home with more trouble.
I explain everything to her, trying to make Rachel seem as innocent as possible, which isn't that hard. Everything about her screams perfect. She has light skin with blonde hair and green eyes. She always tries everyday at school and is a part of the debate club, student council, and everything in between. Me on the other hand, rarely ever tries anymore. I used to be just like Rachel, but after the accident, I've stopped trying to be perfect. I still have good grades and go to bed on time, but I'm always in the office and in detention for "non-exemplary behavior."
Rachel gets to leave with one detention day, and that's it. She is still crying when I get out. I remind her it could be worse. Hell, I got three days of detention and a failed assignment in Carl's class because I was in the office. Rachel was able to make it up, but I couldn't, which meant a worse grade in his class for me.
Rachel tells me she's more worried about her public appearance, and I laugh at her about it
"I mean, in what two years, you will be going to college and no one will care nor will they remember the one detention day you got." I tell her and she looks at me worriedly.
"What about you? Don't you want to go to college?" I shrug and take her hand.
"Jeez Rach, you worry too much. I'll be fine. Don't worry about me." Those last two sentences trigger another harmful memory I have to shove down before I cry as much as Rachel is.
The bell rings and we're off to our next classes. Everyone who used to be my friends smile and say hello to Rachel and glance at me with a pitiful look. I know what they're thinking. There's little miss perfect and her sad friend. Her depressed friend. The only one that has a fucked up past when all of us have perfect, storybook lives.
TW FOR SEXUAL HARASSMENT
The last bell rings and I walk to my locker. I'm grabbing my books. Just to give you a clear view of things, I am wearing a sweatshirt, tennis shoes, and black leggings. My ass is entirely covered and my breasts are covered by my baggy sweatshirt. A group of boys walk behind me, and one touches my ass. I freeze and turn, knowing exactly who it is.
"Kail, don't you have your grandma to screw?" I ask and he looks taken aback.
"When did you become feisty?" I roll my eyes and try to walk away, but he blocks my path. I'm eye level with his American Eagle hoodie and I have to look up to meet his brown eyes. He looks me up and down and licks his lips.
"You're a pig." I tell him and he just laughs. He gets closer to me and my breath quickens.
"Hey!" I hear Keegan yell from her office, "what are you boys doing?" They run away before she can see and I shiver. She smiles at me warmly. I really like Keegan. No matter how much I would misbehave or get in trouble, she would forgive me. I nod at her and walk out the door.
When I get home, my mom is still at work. I go to my room and open up my drawer. A picture of my family is in there and I grab it.
"God I miss you dad."
