MACIES POV
"Alright. It's time to go out." Brian pats my shoulder and my heart stops for a second.
I'm not ready.
"C'mon Scout." Tyler gives me a soft look. Back in second grade, I got my hands on a copy of To Kill A Mocking Bird and insisted that everyone call me Scout after reading it over and over. Since then Tyler has called me that.
I feel Garret's arm reach under mine. We walk out of the room and down to the doors of the main part of the church. I don't think my hearts ever beat this fast before. I can feel the panic building up inside of me. Mom and Dad are in there.
"Okay. Here we go." Brian opens the door and we take the first step in. All eyes turn to us and I can feel the pressure building up in my stomach. I try my best to distract myself by sneaking looks at all the people around me and seeing who I recognize.
I spot a lady in a white blouse, crying. She has mascara running down her cheeks, but I'm pretty sure I remember her as Rebecca, the lady from New Years. I take another quick glance to my other side and see Brian's and Tamil's families and...
Danny. My three best friends sit near the front of the church. I'm both relived, yet embarrassed to see them. By this time, I'm fully aware of the tears that have fallen from my eyes and are running down my cheeks. The walk down the aisle seems to be never ending. I look at Garret to see him trying his best to hold back tears.
"It's okay to cry." I whisper to him.
"I know." He replies. We finally reach the front of the church after what feels like forever. I stop abruptly in front of the two coffins at the front.
My parents.
They look so still and calm, almost like they're sleeping. Alongside sleep comes dreams, but this is more of a nightmare. More tears plummet from my eyes before Garret drags me away and sits us down in the front row. Brian and Tyler sit down beside us, while Tamil walks to the microphone at the front. Her and mom promised each other that whoever died first, the other would have to hold their funeral. She said she wanted happy, upbeat music to be played to remind people that a funeral is not held to dwell on the death of someone, but to celebrate the life that they lived.
"Hello everyone. My name is Tamil Carson, I was Shea's best friend, although I became very close with Derek over the years as well." I can see her eyes beginning to gloss over, but Tamil is a very strong woman, who can somehow always manage to keep herself together, even during the hardest times. "Today we have gathered here to celebrate the wonderful lives of Shea and Derek Taylor. I remember way back when I first met Shea. She was such a bitch, but then again, so was I." She smiles and earns a laugh from the crowd. "We met in freshman year of high school and instantly clicked. We've been best friends ever since then. On our graduation night, I took her to a party after we were kicked out of Target, long story," she pauses. "and that's where she ended up meeting Derek. They instantly fell in love, despite the fact that Shea was not single at the time." She glances at Tyler.
"She was dating me." He announces and another laugh is heard.
"Anyways, almost 5 years later I think, they got married at a small park in their hometown. The priest was a little sketchy, but I guess the papers were legal, so it all worked out. I was her maid of honor, and Brian and Tyler over there were groomsmen. A couple years later, Shea announced that she was pregnant, but what she didn't know was that she was actually eating for three. After nine months, she gave birth to two beautiful babies who are here sitting in the front row today." I feel my cheeks go red and I squeeze Garret's arm. "I want to thank my best friend for all the memories we created that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Now please, I know this isn't traditional touchy, feely funeral music, but Shea requested to me a long time ago that she wanted this song to be played at her funeral." Tamil smiles before stepping down from the pedestal and coming to join us in the front row. A few claps, laughs and cheers sound from the crowd as the song "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" erupts from the speakers.
