DANNYS POV
The tears running down her face make it hard to hold back my own.
"Danny... I need some time alone. I need some time to think, and just work through everything. Please, for now at least, just forget about everything. Forget about us." She shoves past me back into the school. I can't move. I can't breathe. What did she just say?
"But I still love you." I whisper to myself. How can she just expect me to forget about the most amazing five months of my life? She can't actually be serious right? I promised myself I'd fix this. I told myself that everything would be fine and we would be back to normal in no time. My breathing shortens into quick panicked gasps of air.
"Danny...?" Sam's voice speaks from behind me. "Are you okay?" I shake my head and allow her to escort me to a bench and set her arm around my shoulders.
"She hates me. She doesn't want to get back together." I sob into my hands. I'm glad that no one uses the back doors, otherwise having an emotional breakdown like this would be incredibly awkward.
"Danny, she doesn't hate you, she just needs time to get better. She has a lot to work through." Sam pats my arm.
"But that doesn't change the fact that she doesn't want to get back together." I wipe my face with my sleeve.
"I'm so sorry Danny." Sammy whispers sympathetically and sets her head on mine. I can't believe this actually just happened. Macie doesn't want to get back together. She doesn't want to try and fix us. I made her my everything and now I have nothing.
...
*Friday after school*
The next few days after the fight were fairly normal. It kinda reminded me of back when Macie was new to the school and I has a really big crush on her, but I didn't know if she liked me back. The only difference is that this time I know she doesn't.
She's been talking to Drew a lot more lately. I wish she wouldn't, but I guess I can't do anything to stop her. Garret told me that she's been seeing Amy everyday after school which is good. He said that he's already seen a significant decrease in her abnormal behavior. She talked to me once yesterday. Of course she only asked me if I had an eraser, but it was still something.
"That didn't even take you an hour! Thank you Danny!" The librarian smiles at me. I volunteered to help her organize some books after school today, mostly because I was hoping if I took long enough, I would run into Macie as she's leaving the guidance councillors office.
"No problem." I wave goodbye as I exit the library. It's only been 45 minutes since school ended so I'll have to find something to do for 15 minutes until Macie comes out. I stand around the corner and pass the time scrolling through my Twitter timeline.
"Alright, see you on Monday!" I hear a door open and Amy's voice spills into the hall.
"Bye! I'll text you if I need anything." Macie laughs. It's nice to hear her laughing. I casually walk forward and find myself a few steps ahead of her.
"Danny, what are you doing here?" She asks. Her tone doesn't sound mad nor surprised. Her voice is at it's simplest, friendliest form and I find myself being pulled back under her spell.
"I uh, was helping in the library." I tell her.
"Oh. That's nice." She grins. I return the smile, a real smile. I'm glad she's finally talking to me again. I follow Macie to her locker and lean against the wall as she opens it. "Danny I'm really sorry about everything I said on Monday. It was dumb and I shouldn't have said that stuff."
"It's okay. I'm sorry too. I hope you're doing better." I nervously grab my arm.
"I am, thanks. Amy's been helping a lot." She shoves a small pink notebook into her bag. Wait... was that what I thought it was?
"Uh... Do you need a ride home?" I offer.
"Sure. That would be nice." She clicks her lock shut and slings her bag over her shoulder. Her hand hangs loosely at her side, calling for me to grab it but I resist the temptation. I unlock my car and get in the passenger seat. Macies throws her bag in the backseat and sits up front.
"So..." I sigh as I start the car and pull out of the parking lot.
"Do you maybe want to hang out this weekend?" She offers. I feel my entire face light up and my heart beats out of my chest.
"Ya! I mean... Sure." I reply. She giggles softly causing my smile to brighten even more.
"We can go to a movie?" She looks at me for my opinion.
"Sounds like fun!" I answer her.
"I'll call you later. Maybe we can go tonight is there's anything good playing."
"Oh, I can't tonight. I'm filming a video."
"That's okay. Tomorrow's fine." She assures me. We pull up in front of her house and I stop the car. I get out while she's replying to a text and grab her bag. I quickly pull out her diary and leave it in the backseat.
"Here you go. See you tomorrow." I pass her the backpack.
"Thanks. Bye!" She waves as she adorably skips up her walk. I drive around the corner of the block and park my car where she won't be able to see it. I snatch the book from the back and open it to Saturday.
"Dear Diary,
She's back and more controlling than ever. I've already done things that I regret on her behalf. I need help..."I flip to Monday.
"I fought with him after school. I couldn't help but think about how he was right. I'm pushing everybody away..."
I skip forward again to see a short, uncompleted entry from today.
"Dear Diary,
Amy's been helping me so much. The voice is already lessening with each day and I can feel myself becoming more in control of my thoughts. I've started to eat a little more and I'm slowly working my way back up to a regular diet.Anyways, I've been talking to Drew a lot lately. He says he's really sorry for what happened and only hopes for me to forgive him. He asked me out..."
My hearts skips a beat. I know she doesn't like me anymore, but if she likes him, then I know that this is for sure going to be my breaking point.
"I kindly declined of course. I'm not over Danny yet. Actually, I don't know if I ever will be. I still love him and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he feels the same, I just don't know how to tell him."
My entire world pauses and I find myself reading the sentence over and over again. The more I read it, the more real it becomes. Macie still likes me. I sigh with relief and get out of my car to walk back to her house. I ring the doorbell and wait for a few seconds before someone answers.
"Hey!" Macies smiling face opens the door.
"Uh, I think this fell out of your bag." I hand her the diary.
"Omg, thanks." She grabs the book. "I didn't even realize it was gone. Thanks so much." She leans forward and hugs me. Her touch sends chills though my entire body. I've missed her so much.
"No problem." She lets go. "I gotta head out though, I still need to film." I shove my hand in my pocket.
"Oh right! How about you call me later then when you're done?"
"Okay." I grin.
"Okay." She smiles back.
"That was very The Fault In Our Stars." I remark causing her to laugh. "Alright, I'll call you later. Bye."
"Bye." I turn around as the door closes behind me.
"Yes!" I fist pump into the air and jump down the small staircase. She still loves me.
