MACIES POV

I wake up to a light knock on my bedroom door. I don't remember coming upstairs last night, but I somehow ended up in my bed.

"Macie? Are you awake?" Garret cracks the door open and pokes his head in.

"Ya." I yawn and stretch my arms above my head. "How'd..."

"You fell asleep on the couch. I carried you to your room."

"Thanks GareBear." I smile and stand up. "I'll be down in a bit. I'm gonna take a quick shower."

"Okay." Garret exits my room and closes the door behind him. I drag myself over to my bathroom and rid my body of yesterday's clothing, turning on the shower. I stop to look at myself in the mirror, rubbing my hands under my tired eyes. Some of yesterday's makeup rubs onto my fingers reminding me of how unorganized my life is. I can't seem to do anything right anymore. I hop in the shower and focus on the burn of the hot water against my skin rather than the burn of pain in my heart. I wash my hair and body and shut off the water, then grab a towel to wrap around myself.

I drag myself over to my closet and grab a white Sum 41 tee and ripped black denim shorts, then do my usual foundation, powder, mascara, and eyeliner routine and leave my hair as is to dry. The soft sound of birds chirping outside distracts my thoughts about Danny. I wish I was a bird. They get to live carefree and fly wherever they please. I grab my phone and bag and hurry downstairs to find Garret and Sam sitting in the living room. I pick an apple from the fridge and shove it in my backpack.

"You ready to go?" Garret asks. Sammy smiles at me and I smile back.

"Ya." I nod. I pull on my flats and open hold the door open for everyone to get out.

"So I hear you're having some Danny problems?" Sam starts as we walk down the steps.

"If you mean that he's being an asshole to me for some unknown reason, then yes, I guess you could say that." I laugh.

"Wanna fill me in?"

"Sure." I tell her what happened with the phone call and watch as a confused look invades her face.

"Wait, so he didn't give you any reason at all? Not even a hint?"

"Nope." I say, popping the p.

"Guys are dumb."

"Hey!" Garret fake sounds offended and places his hand over his heart.

"Garret you're dumb." Sam and I both speak at the same time. The three of us laugh and continue talking until we get to school.

"Well, I'll see you guys later." I wave as I close my locker and head down to chemistry. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to talk to Danny, or if he'll even talk to me at all. The bell rings right as I enter the room and look at the back. Danny's not even here.

...

The school day goes by dreadfully slow. Paul told me that Danny said he was sick, although he didn't seem to catch on when I hinted about Danny being mad at me. Amy told me to try not to worry too much, but I can't just forget about what he said. Why would he say that? I repeatedly kick a rock with my foot as I slowly make my way down the sidewalk. "In Bloom" by Nirvana screams through the full volume of my earbuds. Music has always been my escape from reality. I feel a tear run down my cheek. When did I start crying? I redirect myself and head to sit down on a bench across the street, resting my head in my hands. A few songs pass until I feel a tap on my shoulder.

"Do you mind if I sit here?" I pull out one of my earbuds and glance up at the scruffy looking man who stands above me, smiling sweetly.

"Uh, no not at all." I scooch over to allow him more room. He sits down, leaving a respectable amount of space between us. I wipe my face with my arm and pull out my other earbud.
