Sunday, June 14: 5 days before grad
MACIES POV
"How about this one?" Sammy holds up a short, tight black dress.
"I mean it's pretty, but it's not really a grad dress." I kindly decline and watch as she hangs the dress back on the rack. Teala, Sam and I have all been out dress hunting again since the day after prom. Both of them have already managed to find a dress to their liking, but I don't think I've found the right one quite yet.
"GUYS!" Teala rapidly dashes through the maze of clothing racks until she's standing in front of us. "I think I just found a possible candidate!" She holds up a short, white dress with a black belt and lace pattern hugging the waist and swirling up the one side. Teala pushes the dress up to me and I watch as both her and Sam exchange the same smug look.
"Ah! Try it on!" They both shove me into a change room with the dress and shut the door behind me. I laugh to myself as I remove my normal clothes and pull the dress up, carefully putting my arm through the singular lace designed strap. I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and see my own jaw drop. I actually really like it.
"Can one of you do up the zipper?" I open the door and turn around so they can't see how it looks from the front yet.
"I got you girl." Teala zips me up and forcefully spins me around. "WHAT DID I SAY?!" She shouts and summons Sam to come over and look.
"Omg, MACIE! You look so fucking good!" Sam squeals. I look at myself in the 3 mirrors set up outside the change rooms and do a quick spin. The bottom of the dress flies up around me, circling my every motion.
"What do you think?" Teala sighs and sits down on the small couch next to the mirrors.
"I really like it." I smile and push my hair out of my face.
"Go change, buy it and let's move onto shoes!" Sam points me back to change. I shut the door and look at myself one more time in the small mirror. I really like this dress. It seems like something mom would've picked out for me.
"Macie, you almost ready?" Teala asks from the other side of the door.
"Uh, ya. Almost!" I race to get the dress off and pull my t-shirt back over my head. I throw my purse over my shoulder once I'm finished and step back out. I pay and we head up the escalator to the same store where I bought my shoes for prom.
"I need to get some new flip flops, but I'll come over when I'm done!" Sam tells us as we enter the store.
"Oh shit, me too actually!" Teala adds. "I'll be right over, hold on." Teala and Sam head off to one side of the store, leaving me to venture to the other side on my own. I don't mind though. I honestly prefer to shoe shop on my own because I'm really picky when it comes to these things. Last time we were shopping for prom, so it was okay to wear high tops, but this time I think I'm gonna go for a more formal look and head down the heels section.
"Fancy meeting you here." A voice speaks from behind me and I turn around.
"Alex!" I smile and step forward to hug him. "What's up? We haven't talked in a while!"
"Ya, sorry about that. I've been really busy lately with school and stuff."
"It's okay, don't worry."
"So how's it going?"
"Good. Shopping for grad."
"Ay, I did that last week. I mean, I was shopping with my mom but that just makes me cooler."
"Oh ya." I nod and we both laugh.
"So what're you looking for today?"
"Uh, I think I was gonna get some heels. Small ones though. I don't wanna break my ankle while I'm trying to walk across the stage."
"Reasonable." He smiles at me. "Got a particular color or style in mind?"
"Black probably. I don't really care that much about style, just as long as they're not over a hundred bucks." I giggle. I hate spending money and I literally only tend to buy things when they're on sale.
"What color's your dress?"
"Oh, hold on. I can actually show it to you, I have it with me right now." I set down the paper bag containing the dress on a chair and pull it out.
"Wait! Uh... I'm trying to remember where they are... There're totally some shoes around here that would look really good with that. I think they're in the next isle..." I quickly stuff the clothing back into the bag and link my arm with Alex's.
"Then let's go!" He nods and I follow him into the next isle. I look up and down the racks of shoes upon shoes until he makes an abrupt stop, causing me to almost bump into him.
"Here they are!" I drop my arm so he can reach up and grab a box off the shelf. "Size seven, right?"
"Ya, I'm surprised you remember." I laugh as he hands me a black box. I set my bag down on the floor and sit on the little bench behind where I'm standing. Alex sits down beside me as I open the lid of the box and fold back the paper to see a pair of velvety black wedges, with a thing ankle strap and a small black bow attached. I slide my shoes off and pull these ones on, then stand up and take a few steps.
"What'd you think?" Alex remains seated, but looks up to make eye contact with me.
"They're perfect. Thank you." I walk in a circle and laugh softly before sitting back down. I replace the shoes with my own and put them back in the box.
"Where the hell did she...? Macie! There you are!" Sam and Teala spot me and walk down the isle towards where I'm seated next to Alex. They both briefly sneak a non obvious at Alex before directing their attention back to me and the box in my hands.
"Did you find some shoes?!" Teala smiles.
"Uh, ya. Alex picked them out."
"Well let's see them!" I open the box and pull out the shoes.
"Ah! Those are so cute!" Sam squeals and snatches it from my grip. Teala swipes the other one and I can't help but laugh as they examine the shoes.
"They're gonna look so good with your dress!" They both return them to the box and I stand up, grabbing my bag off the floor. Alex follows behind as we head to the front of the store and towards the cash register. I pay for the shoes and grab the bag he hands me over counter with a smile.
"Thanks! I'll talk to you later! Bye!"
"Bye!" He waves back. The moment we're out of the store, Teala and Sam both stop and stand in front of me.
"Okay, he's so into you." Sam nods her head.
"He's literally just doing his job!" I laugh and try to keep walking, but they stop me.
"I know that as a cashier, his job to to help 'check you out', but damn bae, was he ever checking you out."
"We're just friends! We only know each other from middle school and besides, it's not like I like him in that way."
"Does he know you have a boyfriend?" Teala raises an eyebrow and stuffs her hand in her pocket.
"Yes. He knows I'm dating Danny, so can we please just drop this subject."
"Fine." Sammy sighs and sarcastically rolls her eyes. "But that doesn't mean he doesn't still like you."
"Oh my god, shut up. We're just friends." I laugh as we walk towards the exit of the mall and out to the parking lot. Alex doesn't have a crush on me. He knows I'm with Danny, why would he like me?
