When Emma returned to the office the following morning, Pierre and Orvil were already there, or they never left. The latter seemed more likely. Pierre wearily clicked through the long list of things Jamie did under Camden's name.

'Nothing related to children. The only Pokémon associated with Camden, other than his own Crobat and pet Charmander, is that Ditto. We've contacted Toru Oak. He said he'll take the first flight from Saffron City to Phenac. I guess he wants to see his dad.'

'Someone else will speak to Toru. You two must get some sleep.'

Pierre sighed. 'I'm worried about a potential kid, Chief...'

'I know. So am I. But at the end of the day, if the kid is safe, it's none of our business and perhaps best we don't record it. A cloned Celebi flying around, on the other hand... I wonder if someone would be willing to train it? I'd be much more comfortable if it was in the hands of a competent Trainer. Anyway, I have to go see Jamie, so you two have to promise you'll rest.'

'We will, Chief.'

Emma's Pokémon recovered from the battle with Ryland and the escaped prisoners. Her Volcarona flew her back to Agate Village. As for Ryland himself, there were people who knew him better than any police officer. She promised Carlos and Tommy a reward if they caught him.

Trip answered the door. This time, Jamie asked both of his parents to stay. He needed to get past the irrational feeling of shame when admitting he was an embarrassment to his father, purely because they were both men.

'Before we start, Jamie...'

'You found the video.'

Emma smiled. 'Is that intuition?'

'I mean... it was on the table. I'm not hacking. Y'all took my electronics away. I guess you want to know why it was addressed to Raidne, not Lavender?'

'That's none of my business. I only wanted to ask if you'd like me to pass it on to her.'

'I guess so. For all I know, I won't see her before we both go to jail for life, so...'

'I hope not, but I'll do that. I'm sure she'll be happy to receive it. If there is anything you'd like to tell me about Lavender... there's no need to feel guilty.'

'I don't feel guilty. There just... isn't anything to say.'

There was a moment of awkward silence. Jamie knew that Emma was perfectly aware that wasn't true.

'I mean... I wasn't there when she joined Cipher. I know Lovrina recruited her. But look... she had her faults, but she wasn't a bad person. I didn't love her because she bullied me into it. I just did. And I also loved Raidne, but that wasn't as clear, because...'

Amber and Trip had no idea what 'the video' was. They figured that Jamie loved Raidne. There was a barely perceptible light in his eyes when he talked about her, but they knew their son. They knew his eyes were almost always blank.

'There are different kinds of love. There's, like... adoration... which is still love, in the moment, but it isn't always healthy... and there's love that's just... love. The first is easier to see because passion is in your face. You can't see the latter when you're 14 and shitting all over it because you're wrapped up in that passion. It wasn't Lavender's death that made me snap out of that. It was snapping out of that state in general. I suddenly came to and I wasn't 14 anymore. I was 24, none of the things I so passionately believed about my family and life were true, multiple people had died and my own life was ruined.'

'Thank you. I appreciate you sharing that with me.'

'Is all this really relevant?'

'Absolutely. This case would be very different if you were still insisting on world domination, instead of admitting you snapped out of it and regretted the deaths.'
