I grimaced at my orange graduation robe and sighed, poking my white dress. I've been sitting next to Luke in the second row for three. The last name rule was so stupid. Thanks to that, all my friends were chilling in the back and here I was, sitting near the front. Why did I have to have Anderson as my last name?
"Can you all hear me?" Marcie asked through the microphone. She tapped on it loudly and stood tall and proud in her heels. Just kidding, she looked like she was going to fall off the stage but she looked proud for being chosen valedictorian.
"YES!" we all yelled back. She grinned and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear and cleared her throat.
"Okay, I'll start my speech now," she said, nervously laughing. "Before I begin, I just wanted to point out that this took me three hours to memorize."
"And this is why I'm proud to not be smart," Luke said, leaning back in his chair. If he leaned any further, he would fall on the guy behind him so I jabbed him in the ribs. He almost fell and some people around us stared at him and he gave me an evil glare.
"Whoops," I innocently said, readjusting my hold on my diploma and awards. I was surprised to get the AP Calculus BC and AP Psychology award, considering the fact that I hardly paid attention. Well, Sam and Marcie also shared the awards along with me so that made more sense.
"I'm not going to start off with a quote or a saying because that's pretty cliché. FYI, I'm going to make this a little short because most of y'all look like you might fall asleep any second." I jabbed Luke in the ribs so that he wouldn't fall asleep.
"To every single one of you who made it today, got an award, got a diploma, or even managed to go through high school without giving up, y'all deserve a big round of applause. It's high school, there are ups and downs, people that are going to love and hate you, and drama at some point. Here's a special shout out to my friends who were always there for me and didn't leave me alone in Calculus even though they hated the class." Nena and I let out a cheer and the guys let out a low whistle. The poor parents in the back didn't know what she was talking about.
"I really want to thank this school and my teachers and I could go on and on about unforgettable memories and friendships and my amazing classes, except Freshman year gym class, but the point is that high school is an amazing place whether you like it or not so just wait for another minute while I finish up and then you're free forever. Just kidding, you have another four more tortuous years to go through." She really got me excited for a second.
"Well, class of 2021, this has been a crazy and unforgettable year and many things have changed, especially this year. Unfortunately, life is going to be just like that so deal with it and move on. I'm going to stop now because these heels are killing me, thanks a lot Nena, so PEACE OUT CLASS OF 2021!"
We all cheered and screamed and threw our hats in the air. Thank god, I wanted to get rid of that. "We graduated!" I yelled at Luke.
"Fucking finally!" he yelled, grabbing me into a tight hug. "Don't forget your big brother."
"We're only going to be an hour away," I sniffed, hugging him tighter. Seventeen and a half years wasn't enough. "We still have the whole summer but you better call me everyday."
"The same goes to you," he said, breaking away. "Stop crying, you look like a raccoon."
"Gee thanks," I rolled my eyes. I was engulfed into another familiar pair of arms and I started to cry again. Why the hell am I so emotional?
"We're finally done!" Sam cheered, spinning me around in his arms. I wrapped mine tightly around him and wiped some of my tears away.
"I'm going to miss this crappy place," I admitted. The last semester of high school was the best and there was nothing that could change that.
