It was snowing outside, winter seems longer than usual winters. Drey being another snowfall change in my life time ran faster and I found myself helpless.
Drey was asleep, covered with warm sheets. The room was so silent that the only sound that could be heard was the machines singing it's beat and the sound of the pages turning around as I read.
Mr and Mrs Davis went home to get some stuff, mom was at her cafe, Dad went on a business trip, Ellevi was probably at chrush, Lily was at work, Ruth was dancing somewhere with grief and Miles was also sound asleep on the couch, I could see his chest moving up and down as he breathe.
He was awake the whole night, looking after Drey, even though we said he'll be fine. Miles was actually the one with the most pain, he had sheared almost all the memories he remembers with Drey and seeing him slowly dying was as numb and painful as his own death and he couldn't do anything about it.
"What are you reading?"
The voice instantly took me out of the fiction world I was in.
"Oh!! I didn't know you were awake", I said with a smile to Drey.
"What are you reading?", he asked again.
"Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. It's one of the books Song recommended me to read", I replied.
"Jeong Song, your cousin?" , he asked as he pulled himself up to sit.
I nodded yes and helped him settle down.
Taking a deep breath he turned around towards Miles. A tiny smile was born on his lips as he laid his eyes on his bestfriend.
"Look at him , peacefully sleeping even though he doesn't fit in the sofa", he chuckled.
"Yeah," I smiled, "Anyways how was your sleep?"
"I missed you guys", he replied.
"We're always here."
"As long as I'm here," he nodded, "Where are the others? Mom, Dad, Elle, Ruth, Lily and Mrs Solo?"
"Your mom and dad will be here soon. And . . the others will be here by the evening too", I informed.
Drey stared outside at the snow in silence.
Bang!! Miles fell on the ground and broke the silence.
"Miles, are you okay?", I walked towards him and Drey looked at him in concern.
His hair was messy and he wasn't fresh, scratching his head, he looked at me with his dreamy eyes. He looked so cute and adorable, with his perfectly shaped lips slightly parted like a baby. His eyes scanned the room, and than came back and met mine.
"Had a nightmare again?", I asked putting my hands on his shoulders.
The fact that Miles lost his memories too but he doesn't remember it, the fact that he was able to live without knowing his identity, disturbed me everyday. Who is he? How was he? His family? Did he have any siblings? What happened to him? Why doesn't he still remember it? What is the truth?. It hunted me every single day, though my life seems so tragic, his life was as tragic as mine.
"Miles, you ok?" Drey asked when he didn't answer.
He slowly blinked and shook his head and nodded, "Nothing . . . . . I-I'm fine."
I took a glass of water and gave him, "Have a glass of water and rest as much as you want."
He took it and set on the couch motionless again.
After sometimes when everything was fine, when everything came back to staring at the falling snow and talking, Drey said with a sad face, "I didn't go to the cancer support group," than suddenly flashing a smile on me, he said, "Because spending time with you guys is much better than attending the support group which will constantly remind me that I'm dying."
I stared at him for a moment and hugged him with a grin hanging on my face, because I was glad to have Drey, just like he was glad to have all of us around.
"We're here to support you, Drey. Always here." I whispered.
I wish I could do something to make you stay.
~~~
Miles suddenly disappeared somewhere when the others arrived at the evening. Maybe he really a had nightmare that's making him drawn in his thoughts.
"I think Miles is having a hard time figuring something out in his mind, he is probably not the type to express it if it's not necessary. I'm worried." I whispered into Drey's ears.
After a short pause he said, "I think I know what is going on up there."
"What would that be?"
"The truth", he said with a tiny smile.
"Truth? what truth?"
"Ammmm . . . "
"Levi!!", someone shouted as the door forcefully swung open.
Miles Miller.
"Everything alright Miles?", Drey's mom asked, with her eyebrows knotted in concern.
Realizing his actions, Miles calmed down and apologized, "I'm sorry. Ammmm . . . Levi, can I talk to you?"
I turned towards Drey and mouthed, "What truth?"
Because from the molded expression of Miles I knew that it was something serious.
What is it? Can I handle it? but nothing worst can happen again right? but it's ok Levi, don't overthink, if you can heal from the past of yours, you can do this. But do what?
We went to the roof top.
"What do you wanna talk about, Miles?", I asked softly as my eyes scanned the view, Miles.
He stood still unbothered by the snow slowly engulfing him. His hair was unusually messed up, his skin so pale making him look like he was freezing, his eyes taking it's time to blink, his lips slightly parted and I felt words rushing out.
"Don't be mad. Okay?", he finally said.
A tiny part of me was already mad because he told me not to be mad before he told me the reason that'll probably make me mad. But it's just a thing people naturally had.
"Miles, I've never found any reason to be mad at you in all these years of being your girl", I replied as I locked my fingers with his. "Just tell me what is bothering you lately."
He took a deep breath, "It was painful knowing that you remember everything except for me."
"What do you mean?", I was trying my best to understand what he just said. Just a second but I had millions of thoughts.
He pushed his warm body closer and said with sadness filled his eyes, "Don't you remember the kid who was all over you at the chruch camp at LA?"
Wait how does he know about. . . . . . . wait. . . . . your memories. . . . . are you?. . . .
"I am that kid. Matthew", he said it with tears blurring his eyes.
I was shocked, speechless and my body frozen by his words, I was happy but. . . .
" I'm sorry, Levi, I got back my memories a long time ago. A long time ago when you said you'll come back next semester but you never did", a tear reached his chin.
I felt sadness more than madness, I was happy but sorry. For everything. again. Under the snowy evening sky I let myself cry.
