Tom takes a deep breath as he stands at the door to Molly's hotel room. He knocks on it and steps back, hoping that she won't be angry.
"What do you want?" Molly snaps as she opens the door.
"I need to tell you what happened."
Molly looks over and sees Lily playing on the terrace.
"We'll go home, I don't want to make a scene here."
"Of course."
Molly packs up Lillian and and checks out of the apartment. She sends Lily to play downstairs and watch TV while her and Tom talk.
Molly sits back on the bed, ready to listen. "So what the fuck did you do?"
"D-do you remember when... when I... when I came home acting strange?"
"Which time?"
"The first time. Well I... I saw Matt."
"I know."
"But you... you don't. He... he saw me first and cornered me into an alley."
"Thomas," Molly says, concern filling her eyes.
"He... he didn't do anything but... but he said that in order to insure yours and Lily's protection... I need to make a deal with him."
"What kind of deal?"
Tom sighs into his hands. "If I went there every Friday night... and... did what he wanted.... you'd be safe."
Molly's face drops, no words were able to escape.
"What are you talking about?"
"He said that he was in love with me and... and that there's no one else who can compare. That night I... I went to his house, did what he wanted, then came home to you. You asked me if I was drunk or high... no, I... I didn't take anything but... I was a little... off. Ever since then, we've had another agreement, I didn't have to be awake for it. He'd give me... Ketamine, Rohypnol or GHB."
"Oh my God-" Molly says.
"Y-yeah. I... I don't know how much of that you can take before you start getting really loopy but... Matt just handled everything. I didn't want to remember it like I did before, that way I figured that it'd just be so much easier, you know? It wouldn't hit me as bad as it did last time. I still can't forget it... I didn't want to go through that again."
"Thomas, honey-"
"But then I started drinking too. I... I didn't mean to do it but... well I remember being out of it and he'd try to get me to drink. I'm sure that I did, I wasn't in the right mindset for something like that. I don't know why he was so persistent on it, maybe it helped keeping me out or... or he was trying to ruin my life even more, I don't know. But I've been having some trouble ever since, Molly. It's been hard not... not doing it. I'm so sorry and you have every right to be mad at me. I did something really stupid but-"
Molly gets up and walks over to Tom. She wraps her arms around him and rests her head in his shoulder. "It's okay. We'll get help, this isn't your fault. I still want to fucking whack you because of what you did while watching Lily, but I know what he's doing to you and you can't live that this. I'm going to go to the police, alright?"
"N-no, you... you can't, please. Lillian is fine, I assure you. He said that... that he'd hurt me but you...I might be able to bargain for you."
"No, Thomas, this isn't happening. We're not sitting there while some fucking lunatic is out to get us."
"But then he'll know. He's... he's very powerful, Molly, and I don't want to interfere with anything."
"What do you mean, interfere?"
"If we just let it be, maybe me won't try. He tells me all the time how much he loves me and.... and... all this stuff. I'm sure I'll be able to make an arrangement where you and Lily aren't harmed. He... he said that if we got a divorce, you'd be fine. What if we get a divorce?"
"I'm not divorcing you."
"Let's get a divorce. We'll still be married but legally-"
"No," Molly snaps. "No, because if something happens to you, our five year old daughter is not going to be the one in charge of estates and your medical care. The same goes for me, you're my designated person."
"And we'll keep that. It's just that in the eye of the law, we're not together."
"That's the part that matters. I've been mentally married to you since I was 23, and if something happened to you, I wouldn't be able to have any input. This is insane and why the hell would be need us divorced to protect me?"
"I don't know, Molly, but it's the right thing to do. I'll handle this myself."
"This is insane. We have to protect Lillian and the law can do that."
"Lillian already is protected."
"No, she's not."
"I believe him, Molly... he wouldn't hurt a kid. He said it himself, Lily did nothing wrong, she was just born to me and I'm clearly the one he wants. He told me that... that it'll be quick an easy for you, he doesn't want to do anything because you're collateral damage. But you're my wife by choice, but if we're no longer married..."
"Then I get a pass." she whispers. "But I'm not fucking dealing with this. We're going to the police, end of story. I'm not risking getting killed by some fuckwad and after what you went through the first time... he's not laying another hand on you."
"Yes. We have to do this."
"No, Thomas, I'm not divorcing you and I'm not just throwing you off to Matt. We're getting security for this place and to follow you around."
"I don't want someone to follow me around."
"Well I don't want you murdered by this fucking creep."
"I know you're scared, dear, I... I am too but I won't let anything happen to you."
"And you? I'm just supposed to step back and have my five year old lose her father in some horrible way."
"It won't be horrible."
"If it's at his hand, yes, it will be." Molly says. "I'm not risking it but we're not getting divorced. I'm calling the police."
"Please, Molly-"
"You realize that you're asking me to let you get attacked, right? You're practically standing there with your arms wide open saying here I am. Do you want your daughter in 10 years seeing an article about how her father was brutally killed? No, and I'm certainly not letting that happen."
"Mols, I... I'm scared." Tom says. "I don't want anything to happen to you."
"I know." she replies and puts her hands on his face. "But are you okay?"
"Of... of course. I don't remember it anyway."
"You remember some of it."
"Yes but not what counts. I'll be fine, it's better than last time. It's... it's weird but... well I know this time that he cares."
"Cares? Cares?"
"Before it was an act of violence and power, he'd smile and laugh through the whole thing but... but it's different now."
"You're not telling me that you feel sympathy, are you?"
"Well, n-no, but... yeah."
"I'm sure a quick breakdown of your condition originally will fix that right up. This man's a monster who's been preying on you because he knows that you'll do anything to protect your family. He's not going to come after us, he knows better than that. Now, let's get NYPD on the phone."
