Chapter 40

The moment Jules walked into our dorm room, I stopped playing the guitar. He sighed heavily despite me stopping the music almost immediately. "What's going on, Parry?" he asked.

"What do you mean?" I asked as I turned off the amp before putting my guitar back on its stand. "I was playing the guitar. That's what's going on."

"Okay, but I was able to hear you from outside the dorm building," Jules said. "You always play music extremely loud whenever something is up."

"Nothing is up," I reassured. "I've just been thinking about something and playing music helps get ideas flowing." It hadn't really been working, though. I was trying my hardest to help Jules get through his test anxiety so he could actually get good grades. He was smart, but he just didn't do well on tests which was completely unfair.

If I was being honest, tests were shit. Most of the time, they just tested a student's memory, nothing else. Like during math tests. If we weren't given formulas to solve certain equations, we would have to remember all those equations. In the real world, we could just simply look up the formula.

For students that didn't have the best memory or couldn't concentrate during tests, it didn't really prove anything. Someone could study all night and still do poorly because of how tests are run.

"So have you talked to your parents since the science fair?" I asked Jules.

"Nope," Jules said. "Not even for our weekly video chat. I'm sick of them constantly trying to blame you for my failing grades. It's like they can't accept the fact that they have a stupid son."

"You're not stupid," I said. "You do realize that whenever all of us are studying together, you're the one helping everyone else out. Which doesn't make sense because I'm actually the smartest one in our group."

"Parry, every time someone asks for your help, you ask if they're me and when they say no, you tell them they're out of luck," Jules said. "So then they ask me. Either way, it's because you refuse to help them."

"Oh. Then yeah, that makes sense while you're the one always helping. But in my defence... Okay, I don't really have a defensive argument. I just don't want to spend my team teaching people when I can be napping. Or playing music. Or doing anything else. Wait, what were we talking about?"

"We were talking about why I've been ignoring my parents," Jules said as he walked over to the window, peeking out the blinds. "The weather is really bad right now. I won't be surprised if they soon tell people to stay in their dorm rooms. Remember the last time a storm broke out?"

"Ugh, don't remind me," I said as I laid down on my bed. "That was torture."

"Torture?" Jules said as he walked over, sitting down on the edge of my bed. "If I remember, we started dating that day so I can't really see who you can consider it to be torture."

"Huh?" I asked. "Oh, no, that's not the reason why I thought it was torture. It was because our mini fridge was empty and we weren't allowed to go down to the cafeteria or the school store and I was starving. That was the torturous part. Of course I'm happy that we started dating that day." I sat up on the bed. "Is our mini fridge full? Are we going to starve if we really are confined to our rooms?"

Jules got up from my bed and opened the mini fridge. "We are fully stocked so I don't think we will starve." After he closed the mini fridge, he sat back down on my bed. "So what were you thinking about earlier?"

I furrowed my eyebrows. "What are you talking about?"

"When you were playing the guitar. You said you were thinking about something and playing music helps get ideas flowing. So what was it?"

"Nothing. It's fine." I did want to tell Jules that I had been trying to figure out how to help him with his test anxiety, but I also didn't want to get his hopes up just in case I couldn't think of solution. Right now, it might be best to keep the idea to myself.

       "You sure?"

I nodded, giving him a reassuring smile. "I'm sure."

Jules smiled back before he leaned down and kissed me. Unfortunately, the kiss didn't last long because the power suddenly went out. I mean, we totally could have kept kissing but Jules pulled back with a heavy sigh.

"Awe, why'd you stop?" I asked. "Kissing during a power outage is very romantic."

"I was going to work on our English assignment," Jules said, getting up from the bed and walking over to her desk. "I should get started on it now just in case it takes some time for the power to come back on. My laptop might not make it throughout the night."

"Spending time during a power outage doing homework doesn't sound fun at all."

"Then you're lucky you get your homework done as soon as possible."

Except now I was going to be very bored since my boyfriend wouldn't be able to pay attention to me, I couldn't use the internet, and I also couldn't play the guitar. I mean, I could but I couldn't play it with my amp so there was no point.

My cell phone suddenly beeped with a text message, so I grabbed it since apparently receiving texts was the only thing I could do while waiting for Jules to pay attention to me.

It was just my grandpa, wondering if I was safe in my dorm. He was just about to use the PA system to tell students to make their way to their dorm buildings, or if they were with a friend in their dorm to stay where they were, but the power went out before he could do so.

The staff were currently trying to find the backup generator to at least tell everyone to head to their dorms, but Mr. McCabe just wanted to make sure I was okay. I told him I was and asked him if class could be cancelled tomorrow because of this.

The best part? He said that they were debating but they had to wait and see how the storm would play out. Even if school was still on, he said he would tell teachers not to collect homework because there was a chance students wouldn't have been able to complete it in time.

After all, it was just a bit after dinner. Some people might not have had time to start it until now and if they need to use the internet, they couldn't.

"Hey, Jules?" I said. "Wanna make out?"

       "I'm doing homework," Jules said.

"But my grandpa texted me and said school might be cancelled tomorrow and if it's not, homework won't be due so you'll have an extra day to work on it."

Jules stopped typing, so it looked like he was debating the answer. He did, however, keep typing. "I don't think making out with my boyfriend is a good enough excuse to not finish my homework on time."

"Yeah, but our teachers won't ask for our excuses since Mr. McCabe is going to tell them not to collect homework. You won't have to tell them that's the reason."

"Fair enough," Jules said, closing his laptop before walking over to my bed. I smiled, reaching towards him and pulling him to me before our lips connected.
