Chapter 41

I couldn't believe the audacity the school had to make us have school the morning after the power outage. They weren't going to be collecting any homework that was going to be due, but I was looking forward to having the day off. Or at least the morning. I would have loved to sleep in and snuggle with Jules a bit longer but no, we had to go learn.

Part of me wanted to sleep during the classes, but I wasn't allowed to. Even if I did have the highest grades, I was told that not only was it unfair but it showed disrespect to the teacher. I understood what they were saying, but some teenagers could't help their exhaustion so it was kind of unfair to clump them in as only disrespectful and not, I don't know, tired.

Since I decided not to sleep in class, I thought it would be a great idea to entertain myself with none other than S.T.E.V.E now that I had my beloved robot back. Mr. McCabe probably wouldn't be happy if he saw S.T.E.V.E roaming through the halls again but this time, I was smart enough to add a defence mechanism.

I just hope I wouldn't have to use it.

The only reason I was using S.T.E.V.E right now was because it was one of the classes where we were allowed to use our laptops. I didn't have to listen to the lecture and I needed something so I wouldn't be bored.

Jules leaned over towards me, looking at the computer screen to see whatever S.T.E.V.E was seeing. He sighed before saying in a low voice, "Isn't that what got him taken away in the first place?"

"Yes, but my grandpa won't be able to take him away this time," I replied, my voice as quiet. I had to be careful with how loud my volume was, otherwise my teacher would separate me and Jules. Normally when he did, he didn't care if we sat by each other again the next day as long as we behaved.

I would rather not be separated at all so I had to make sure I follow the rules for once.

So far, S.T.E.V.E hadn't come across any staff members in the hallway yet, which was definitely a good thing. I mean, I would have found it funny if anyone sees my robot and tried to grab it, but they would also probably know that the robot was mine, thus getting it confiscated again.

I debated on whether or not I should actually be using my robot right now because even if no one actually grabbed him, Mr. McCabe would probably come to my dorm room to confiscate him if everyone reported seeing the robot roam the hallway. But I just couldn't help it.

I knew exactly why I was doing it. The thrill of almost getting caught. The reactions to getting caught. It was something, even if I knew of all the threats and consequences that came in hand with it.

"Parry," my teacher suddenly said, causing me to look away from my laptop and up at my teacher. "Can you tell me the answer to the question I just asked? Or have you not been paying attention because I'm fairly certain you haven't been taking notes with the lack of typing you've been doing."

Oh, busted. I mean, not really because I could probably answer the question anyway once I found out what it was, but I didn't think my teacher would figure out that I wasn't taking any notes simply by the fact that I wasn't typing anything.

I would have to pretend to type now as to not get caught in the future.

"It depends what the question is," I said.

He sighed, but still decided to give me a chance, probably to try to embarrass me, but it never worked. "It's a simple answer. What does Juliet mean when she says O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?"

"Ooh, you're right, that is simple," I said. "She's asking why Romeo has to be Romeo and not someone else. Basically, she's questioning why she fell in love with a Montague. Come on, if you're going to try to stump me, give me something more challenging."

He ignored me and went back to teaching the lesson on one of Shakespeare's most famous plays, while I went back to exploring the school with S.T.E.V.E. That should also prevent him from asking me questions in the future. He seemed to like going for the students who either weren't paying attention or didn't raise their hand.

At least ask someone with their hand raised. I never understood why teachers would ask a question, only to ask someone who they knew didn't know the answer.

Eventually, someone actually walked in front of S.T.E.V.E. I had my robot look up so I could get a better look at the person. It was a woman I hadn't seen before but judging by her business suit and briefcase, she was an important person. So what was she doing here?

Curiosity took over me, so I had my robot follow the woman, making sure to keep some distance so she didn't here the mechanics following behind her. She ended up at Mr. McCabe's office, knocking on the door. He answered it and upon seeing who it was, his expression turned into one of a mix of annoyance and solemn.

Before I could show Jules to see if he recognized the woman, she went into Mr. McCabe's office and the door closed behind them. Honestly, I was tempted to get my robot to go inside the room to eavesdrop, but my grandpa would have seen S.T.E.V.E.

I found a place near the office to hide S.T.E.V.E while waiting for the woman to come out. Maybe if I get an even clearer footage of her face, I could run some sort of facial recognition.

The meeting or whatever it was didn't even end before the bell ring to end class. It was still going on, but I didn't want to miss anything so I kept my laptop open as I gathered up all my things to bring to my next class.

"Paz, it might help if you close your laptop," Jules said as I picked my laptop up, trying to be careful not to drop it.

"Can't. Something is happening and I can't miss it."

       "What?"

"This very important looking woman went into my grandpa's office and I have no idea who she was."

"Could be someone from the school board."

"If that's true, I want to eavesdrop. He looked pretty annoyed and kind of sad to see her."

"You're not going to be eavesdropping, Parry. First off, we need to get to class. And second, if it's something worth knowing, he'll probably end up telling you later on. Just close the laptop and focus on something else, okay?"

I sighed, but I closed my laptop. It wasn't like I was going to find out what was going on just by having S.T.E.V.E keep an eye on the office. If anything, I was just going to have to wait for Mr. McCabe to tell me. If he chose to tell me.
