Chapter 20
Sneaking passed the night security at school was one of the easiest things. I had done it many times before, each time without fail. The security guards never really paid attention to what was happening around them unless the heard something odd. As long as I didn't make a noise, I would be fine.
Maybe we should get security guards that were a bit more attentive but then that would ruin me sneaking out of my dorm room in the middle of the night.
I was surprised they didn't notice a van backing up all the way to one of the hallway doors. I was certain that would caught some sort of attention but apparently, it didn't.
I turned off the van and hoped out of the driver's seat, closing the door as quietly as I could before walking to the backdoor. Right as I got to the back of the van, I saw someone standing there so it caused me to jump a bit. "Dude!" I said. "Why are you standing behind the van? I could have ran you over!"
"What? No, you couldn't have," Jules said. "You were looking out the back window as you backed up. I only stood here once you finished backing up."
"Well, you didn't have to sneak up on me like that," I said. "You could have given me a heart attack."
"What are you doing, Parry?" Jules asked. "The last time you sneaked out of the dorm in the middle of the night, you set up the sprinklers so it would rain colourful water."
"And that was in the top five of my pranks," I said. "I'm just said it was short lived. I would have liked to enjoy it more but no, I got caught way too fast."
"And this time?" Jules asked. "What happened to you being worried about us being separated into different dorms? You told me you couldn't help getting into trouble. I get it. But I just thought you would do simple things like showing up late to class."
"I do that anyway," I said.
"Look, can you please just come back to our dorm room before you get caught?" Jules said. "You're not even trying to stay out of trouble. As soon as you think of a prank, you do it. No hesitation."
"Is that really a bad thing?" I asked.
"Yes!" Jules said. "It is a bad thing! You're told not to get into trouble and you still do it without even trying to resist. You can't just cruise through life doing whatever you want."
"If I expected to cruise through life doing whatever I wanted, I would be in Paris right now," I said. "Okay, not really since I don't care about travelling and I, surprisingly, like school so I would actually go there during the summer but I was proving my point."
"You didn't really prove anything," Jules said. "How many pranks have you pulled that you didn't get punished for?"
"Don't tell me you're implying that I get away with everything just because my grandfather is the headmaster," I said.
Jules sighed. "I'm not. I'm just saying--"
"No, I get what you're saying," I said.
"No, you don't," Jules said. "I just want you to put this van back, wherever you got it from, and come back to our dorm before you get into trouble because I'm pretty sure Mr. McCabe will go through with the threat, especially when you still haven't told him about your addiction to getting into trouble."
"Because he wouldn't care," I said. "Knowing him, he would just be like 'Stop using that as an excuse to get into trouble, Parry'."
"Maybe he wouldn't care because you don't try," Jules said. "Please just... Put the van back and come back to our dorm."
