Chapter 28
Ten-thirty on Monday morning was when the chaos began. Every single prank I had ever pulled happened all at once; the animals in the building, the colourful sprinkler system, a ball pit in the hallway, and a lot more.
Everyone was in their second-period class at the time so they didn't even notice everything happening until the army of ducks started pacing by classrooms.
I was happy all of the pranks were happening until I realized something I wish I knew before the pranks began; the superintendent was at Fyodor Academy at the time to see how well the disciplinary program was going.
But by then, it was too late to stop all the pranks at once.
"Where did all these ducks come from?!" Superintendent Rickborn asked once she, Mr. Clutterbuck, and a bunch of students were in the hallway. "Would someone get rid of them?!"
"I know exactly who did this," Mr. Clutterbuck said through his clenched teeth.
And that was my cue to leave this hallway to activate another part of my plan, especially before Mr. Clutterbuck noticed me here.
I went to the other hallway where the indoor ball pit was. A lot of students were playing in it, throwing the plastic balls at each other and the best part? The teachers didn't seem to care. They were just talking to each other, paying no attention to the ball pit.
Either this was their way of protesting against the disciplinary program or they just wanted an excuse to break from teaching.
I was telling myself it was the first one.
I wanted to see how my other pranks were doing but I couldn't because the PA system turned on with Mr. Clutterbuck's voice saying, "Would Peregryn Hathaway come to the headmaster's office? Now?"
And time for the final part of my plan; getting the disciplinary program terminated.
I went to Mr. McCabe's office and walked inside. Mr. McCabe, Mr. Clutterbuck, and Superintendent Rickborn were all there. Two of the three looked angry.
And the third, Mr. McCabe, looked worried.
Why did he look worried? He knew the plan. He shouldn't be worried.
"Peregryn Hathaway," Mr. Clutterbuck said. "Or should I say, Peregryn Charlesworth? I bet you all did this thinking you could get away with this because of who your parents are."
"Actually, I don't expect any special treat--" I began, but I was cut off by Mr. Clutterbuck.
"I couldn't believe you just thought it was okay to pull all the pranks that are on your record," Mr. Clutterbuck said. "Does the disciplinary program mean anything to you?"
"Not really, no," I said.
"You know, I was looking at your record," Superintendent Rickborn said. "And I've got to say, I'm amazed that you're still in this school after everything." She grabbed a large stack of paper, no doubt my record. "Releasing a wallaby in this school, which injured another student. Having a petting zoo. Covering hallways and floors with bubble wrap. Putting clothes on the statue in the courtyard. Threw a tailgate in the parking lot. Put plastic forks in the football field. Making a slip and slide in the hallway. Hosting a car show. And many, many more."
I was trying my hardest not to smile at the precious memories. Those were the days.
"And yet, you've been given very light punishments considering all the pranks you've pulled," she continued. "I'm starting to question the authority of the headmaster here. Quite frankly, Mr. Clutterbuck would make a better headmaster."
