Chapter 37
"No," Jules said. "Absolutely not. I know I agreed to join you on the science fair project, but I'm not agreeing to this specific project."
"Why not?" I asked. "There's nothing wrong with it, and I don't think anyone has done it before. It's either this, or bringing a bunch of animals to the school."
Jules rubbed his forehead, clearly getting annoyed with me but I couldn't help my annoying personality. I didn't even think it was that annoying. "Parry, we'e not going to be creating a truth serum for the science fair."
I looked at my boyfriend suspiciously. "Do you have secrets from me? Is there something you're hiding? Are you planning on breaking up with me and don't want to accidentally do it during the fair?"
"What? No," Jules said. "But you never know what kind of secret someone who accidentally inhales the serum might have. You don't want to have the guilt of them confessing something they weren't ready for, do you?"
I shrugged. "I never really feel guilty about anything so..."
"Parry..."
"I'm kidding. If you don't want to do the truth serum, then we won't. We're going to have to agree on what to do for the fair since you did say you don't want me to do all the work and you just get the bonus marks for it. But, you know, I'm totally fine with that."
"I know you are, but I want to contribute so it actually feels like I earned the mark."
I nodded. "Yeah, I get that." I hopped up from my desk chair. "Well, I am going to get S.T.E.V.E back."
"Please don't tell me you're going to mess with your grandpa just to get S.T.E.V.E back. And if you are, please don't drag Landry into your mess. The last thing they need is to get a school record as long as yours when they just got to the school."
"I would never," I said.
"Parry."
"And I'm not going to mess with my grandpa. When have I ever done that?'
"With all the pranks that you do?"
"That's... Besides that."
"You can't say besides that when that's the main thing that you do to mess with him. I really don't think you should do anything to get S.T.E.V.E back. Mr. McCabe will give him back eventually. Probably when you calm down or something."
"Oh, I see. He's trying to manipulate me into being a good student and not pulling any pranks. That's cold." I knew Jules was probably right; the more mess I made, the smaller chance I had of my grandfather returning my robot back to me.
So I guess all I had to do for now was not get into any trouble. If that was possible. I couldn't help it.
I flopped down on my bed since I had nothing else to do. Jules and I weren't going to work on the science fair project quite yet. I was just tossing ideas around but right now, he was working on some homework that was due tomorrow.
"Can I do your homework?" I asked.
"Uh, no, you can't," Jules said. "Why would you want to?"
"Because I'm bored."
"Who on earth would want to do homework because they're bored?"
"Me, that's who. So can I?"
"I already said no. Why don't you watch a movie or something while I'm finishing this up?"
"Nah, I don't feel like it." I climbed under my blankets, pulling it up to my chin. "I'll probably nap or something."
I closed my eyes, hoping that I would actually be able to nap since I really had nothing else to do. However, Jules decided to get up from his desk and walked over to my bed, sitting on the edge of it. "Are you doing okay?"
I looked at him. "Yeah. I'm fine."
"You sure?"
I sighed, knowing I wouldn't be able to keep saying I'm fine and have Jules believe me. It was kind of obvious that it was the opposite, even if I was good at hiding it. I guess Jules just knew me well enough.
I didn't say anything else, but Jules climbed into the bed beside me so I curled up beside him. Despite feeling okay throughout the day, being in the dorm room was when I felt like crap. I had way too much free time, so my mind would wander about all the times my parents neglected me and just made me feel like they didn't care about me.
It had been a few weeks since my birthday and I was still waiting for the birthday wished from them. Oh, who was I kidding? I shouldn't be waiting since I knew I just wasn't going to get it at all.
"You should be doing your homework," I said.
"I think it could wait for a bit," Jules said, pulling me closer. "Besides, it won't be the first time I ended up doing my homework at two in the morning."
"That's not a good thing..."
"Don't you stay up to look at memes?"
I was silent for a bit. "Yes, but we're talking about you, not me."
Jules laughed slightly. "Okay, fair enough. But really, are you doing okay?"
"A bit," I said. "It's just when I have free time that I feel bleh. Why do you think I pull pranks all the time? It keeps me occupied."
"You and I both know that is not the reason why you pull pranks. Is there anything you want to do that will get your mind off of everything? You know, besides pulling pranks or trying to get S.T.E.V.E back from your grandpa."
"We could... How about... Maybe..." I sighed heavily. "I got nothing." I reached for my phones. "I guess I could look at memes or something. You, on the other hand, should really do your homework. I don't want you to stay awake all night doing it."
"But we've barely been snuggling."
"It's okay. Just the small amount of time we snuggled was enough for me. Thank you."
Jules kissed the side of my head before sitting up. "How about we work on the project all day tomorrow after school? Once we decide on what to do, that is."
"Yeah, okay. I still think we should do the truth serum."
"No."
"Well, I tried."
