Chapter 1

At times, I wondered if it would be better for me to move into the headmaster's office. After all, I was in here a lot more than my actually dorm room. Okay, not really, but I was in there enough to be able to call it my second home.

I even knew where Mr. McCabe stashed all his food.

I was called to his office quite a while ago but he wasn't even here yet so I took the opportunity to get myself a small bag of chips from his food stashed.

As soon as Mr. McCabe walked into his office, he sighed when he saw me already snacking. "How many times have I told you not to get into my food?" he asked.

"Well, if you were here on time for this meeting, I wouldn't have had to," I pointed out.

"I wasn't here because I had to deal with the mess you made," Mr. McCabe said. "I just don't get it. I don't get why you have to get in trouble so often. I don't know of a single student in all my years of being the headmaster of this school that got even half the amount of detentions you have."

"Okay, but in my defense, I always do it out of the goodness of my heart," I said. "Nothing I've done that got me in trouble wasn't without a good reason."

"Really?" Mr. McCabe asked. "What about last week's incident with the cow in the gymnasium?"

"Oh, come on, who wouldn't want to see a cow in the morning instead of having gym class?" I asked. "And what I did to Malcolm was definitely well deserved. He had it coming."

"Then by all mean, tell me why," Mr. McCabe said and I knew he was being sarcastic, but I still told him.

"Malcolm told Jules that soccer practice was going to start at four instead of three," I said. "And since Malcolm is the captain, Jules believed him and ended up getting in trouble with the coach, so he had to run two laps around the whole campus. Two laps around the whole school."

"That means you can pull such a childish prank and old school prank by setting up a paint can over Malcolm's dorm room door?"

"So what I'm hearing is next time, I should do a more mature prank?"

Mr. McCabe sighed, something he did a lot around me. "What I'm saying is no pranks, Hathaway. You shouldn't have tried getting revenge just because Malcolm lied to your best friend about soccer practice."

       "Boyfriend," I corrected.

       "What?"

"Jules is my boyfriend, not just my best friend."

"You know what? I don't care about relationships my students are in."

"Well, you cared enough last year when you wanted to move me and Jules into different dorm rooms until you realized that it would have been too much work since there are no available rooms. And neither of us can get pregnant."

"Again, I don't care," Mr. McCabe said. "I just don't know what to do with you anymore. You get into way too much trouble and clearly, detention isn't doing it for you anymore. You have the highest grades in the school but also the highest amount of detention. It just doesn't make sense."

My only reply was a shrug. It made sense to me, but it definitely wouldn't make sense for anyone else.

"Alright, this is what I'm going to do," he said. "No detention."
