Chapter 17

One of the ways Fyodor Academy was wrapping up the parent orientation was with the soccer game happening against our rival school. Even though the high school soccer tournament hadn't even begun yet, it was always such a big deal when any of our sport teams played against our rival.

Even though my parents were watching the soccer game, I didn't sit with them. I was trying my hardest to avoid them during the whole parent orientation because even though it was supposed to be about the parents seeing what their children were like at the school, my mom and dad were the centre of attention.

For every single thing that was planned.

Since all of my friends were sitting with their parents and Jules was in the soccer game, the only person I could sit with was Mr. McCabe. And now that I found out he was my grandpa, I really didn't mind spending time with him.

As we were watching the game, with me basically just keeping my eyes on Jules the whole time, Mr. McCabe said, "I assume you're planning an epic prank to go out of the parent orientation with a bang? Like you did all the other years?"

       "Nope," I said.

"And why do I find that so hard to believe?" Mr. McCabe asked.

"Well, it's the truth," I said. "I am not doing a single thing after the parent orientation has ended. Nothing except going in my dorm and wallowing in self pity."

"You're going to have to elaborate more," Mr. McCabe said.

I sighed. "Jules's parents are considering pulling him from this school. They don't think he's reaching his full potential here and they also think I'm a bad influence, which I totally don't understand because I'm, well, me."

"Yes, and who's the one who released all those animals into the school?" Mr. McCabe asked.

"Well, yeah, that was me but I've never actually done anything dangerous or illegal," I said. Mr. McCabe raised an eyebrow. "Okay, I haven't done anything illegal since I started dating Jules so if anything, he's the one that's making me less of a bad influence."

"So you're hoping that if you're on your best behaviour, Jules's parents will be willing to let him stay?" Mr. McCabe asked.

"They did tell him that if he wins the soccer game, they'll consider letting him stay," I said. "So if he does win, then I can't do anything stupid that will sabotage it and make them change their mind again."

"I still don't really get it," Mr. McCabe said. "This is said to be one of the best schools in the country. Why would they want to take him out of it just because of stuff you do?"

"I don't know," I said. "I really don't. And I don't think they're going to change their minds about me."

All I had to do was hope our school won the second game otherwise I didn't know what was going to happen to Jules.

Halfway through the game, I really couldn't tell who was going to win. It was tied right now, four to four. Every time one of the team scored and got ahead, it didn't take long for the opposing team to score and catch up to them.

Even if Fyodor didn't win, Jules's parents shouldn't just pull him out of the school when they really are doing extremely well. Our rival school had always been tough competitors. We win some, we lose some. Either way, both teams played extremely well.

Winning wasn't everything. It shouldn't be everything.

I was really hoping Jules's parents were starting to realize that the more the game went on because the other school was able to pull ahead by two points and there were only five minutes left to the game.
