Chapter 44

As everyone was working on their individual assignments in English class, the PA system suddenly turned on, followed by Mr. McCabe's voice saying, "Would Parry Hathaway please come to the office, thank you?"

As always when someone got called into the office, a few people in class said a chorus of, "Oohs," as if I was in trouble. I mean, they probably got used to me getting in trouble, but I doubt I was in trouble this time considering I didn't remember doing anything that could have gotten me in trouble.

Of course, there had been times where I set up a prank and forgotten all about it so it could be that but Mr. McCabe didn't sound annoyed. If anything, it was probably about that stupid science program that I didn't want to enrol in.

Part of me was tempted to just ignore the announcement and pretend I didn't hear it, but that wouldn't exactly work since Mr. McCable knew what class I was in and what dorm I stayed in. Nothing would stop him from showing up to get me.

Since it was near the end of the class, I packed up my stuff in case I was in the office by the time the next class started.

I walked to Mr. McCabe's office and knocked on the door. "Come in," he said, so I opened the door.

I didn't fully walk into the office. I just saw my mom sitting on one of the chairs and I knew, I just knew, she was here to try to convince me to enrol into the science program. She never listened to me so I knew this conversation was going to be useless. "Nope," I said. "I'm not dealing with this."

I turned around to leave. Mr. McCabe sighed and said, "Parry, wait. Just hear her out."

"Is she here to convince me to enrol into the science program?" I asked.

"It's an amazing opportunity, Peregryn," Mom said.

I scoffed before I left the office, closing the door behind me. Mr. McCabe called out after me, but I ignored him. After all, it was only fair since he and Mom were ignoring my wishes of wanting to stay at Fyodor Academy. Mom basically ignored me my whole life. She shouldn't get a say in my education now.

I knew going back to my classroom or my dorm wasn't going to help since Mr. McCabe could easily show up there with Mom. I needed to find a place I could hide where they wouldn't find me. The first spot was the dormitory's roof, but Mr. McCabe knew I liked hiding there from time to time. The second was one of my friends' dorm, but that would also be a dead give away.

I could also orchestrate a prank that Mr. McCabe would put all his focus on cleaning up, but I didn't have the time to do that. Instead, I went with the option that would make it hard for Mr. McCabe or Mom to find me unless someone ratted me out.

I simply snuck off of campus. I knew the ins and outs so despite all the restrictions that made it difficult for someone to sneak off campus, it was very easy for me. The only difficult part was finding a place to hang out until I felt like returning to campus.

Jules ended up texting me, wondering when I was going to come back to class. I told him I wasn't and that I was currently off campus because my mom was in the office trying to convince me to enrol into the science program.

Jules, thankfully, didn't try to convince me to come back to school. He just told me to stay safe and left him know when I was planning on coming back. He may not exactly like the way I approach things, but he also knew how much I wanted to stay at Fyodor.

I got a few calls from both Mr. McCabe and my mom, but I ignored all of them. A few texts came in as well, so I sent a text saying, You were unable to reach the recipient. Please try again later. They didn't believe it, but I just kept sending that as a reply until they took the hint.

It wasn't until around dinner time that I decided to head back to campus, first texting Jules to let him know. Thankfully, I was able to avoid Mr. McCabe as I made my way to my dorm. Jules was there, working on an assignemnt.

"Are you just going to run away off campus every time the science program is brought up?" Jules asked.

"Possibly," I said. "Either that, or I could order something every time Mr. McCabe or my mom brings it up. Like... One mention equals one call to my animal guy."

"I don't think that would work," Jules said.

"I don't know," I said. "I assume the science program is a lot more strict than this school, so maybe they realize that my pranks would likely get me kicked out of the program not even a week into the school. Not even a day, if I'm being honest." I walked over to my bed and laid down on it. "What I don't get is why Mr. McCabe is on my mom's side for this. Ever since I found out he was my grandfather, he has been in my corner. He stands up for me."

"Hmm..." Jules stopped working on his homework and spun around in his desk chair to look at me. "What if your mom is blackmailing him?"

I furrowed my eyebrows. "Why would she blackmail him?"

"I don't know, but hasn't she done it before?" Jules asked. "She told him the only way you would attend this boarding school was if he didn't tell you that he's your grandfather. Maybe she's blackmailing him with something else." He sighed. "Sorry, I shouldn't assuming your mother is blackmailing him."

"No, I think you're onto something," I said. "And I'm definitely not going to let her win."
