Chapter 16

As much as I loved the extravagant pranks I pulled, I also enjoyed the subtle pranks that just messed with everyone's mind. They were such easy pranks to pull and everyone's reactions were the best.

One time, I got a rumour spread of a prank I was going to pull at a certain time on a certain day and instead of the teachers approaching me about the prank I was planning, they decided to wait until that day and try to ruin my prank. A bunch of teachers stood outside of where I was the prank was going to take place and waited for hours.

Little did they know that was the prank.

When they realized I was going to do anything, they all go extremely mad.

       It was the best.

I still wanted to do an extravagant prank during the parent orientation weekend but I decided to start off with one of the subtle pranks, this time by sneaking out in the middle of the night and rearranging all the flyers and posters all over the school so they were all slightly tilted.

Afterwards, I headed to the boiler room to set up from my extravagant prank. There was a chance I wasn't even going to set it off but if things got worse with my parents, they better prepare for the mess I was going to make.

I was so hard at work, I didn't even hear the door to the boiler room open. All of a sudden, I heard someone say, "You know, I was kind of hoping you tilting all the posters in the school was the only thing you were going to do."

I turned around, trying my best to muster up my most innocent look. "I was just fixing the pipes. There was a leak."

Jules snorted. "Right, because you would totally be the one to fix pipes at two in the morning instead of Mr. McCabe just getting a handyman to repair it, and before coming here you would totally tilt all the posters. So what are you really doing?"

"Depends," I said. "What do you think I'm doing?"

"That's what I'm afraid to know," Jules said.

       "Then why did you ask?"

"Parry, I don't have time for these mind games," Jules said. "It's two in the morning. I'm tired."

"Why are you here and not in bed?" I asked.

"Oh, I don't know," Jules said. "Maybe because I woke up to my boyfriend sneaking out of the dorm room so I decided to follow him to make sure he didn't get into any trouble. So please you're not going to do anything that's going to get you suspended or expelled."

I chuckled as I got back to work. "Oh, Redgrave. I think you should know by now that it's impossible for me to get suspended or expelled."

"So you're using your grandfather's status for your own good?" Jules asked.

"What? No," I said. "Well, not worry. Don't worry, this won't be the worst thing I have done. In fact, I don't think it ranks the top five. Okay... Maybe it does rank the top five but definitely not top three."

"Look, I know I helped you with the animal army but I really think you should just stop with the pranks," Jules said. "It's not going to change anything."

"Well, it might change my parents perspective on how they should parent," I said. "And, you know, try to keep in contact with me more often. But let's face it. That probably won't happen so instead, I'm using this prank for my own amusement."

"Can we just please go back to our dorm?" Jules asked.

"Yeah, sure," I said, only because I finished setting up for my prank. He knew it too, sighing as I walked towards him but he didn't bother to say anything else about it.

As soon as we got back to our dorm room, I flopped down onto my bed, feeling quite peaceful. I always did after setting up for a prank.

However, the peaceful feeling went away as soon as Jules said, "My parents are planning on sending me to another boarding school."

I sat up, looking over at Jules. "I'm sorry, I must have heard wrong. Because it sounded like you said your parents are planning on sending you to another boarding school."

       "They are," Jules said.

"...It's not because of me, is it?" I asked. "If it is, that's homophobic."

"No, it's not because of you," Jules said. "At least they said it's not but I honestly think a tiny bit of it is. Not so much anymore now that they found out you're the smartest student here. They think this school isn't doing enough to help my 'potential'. Even though this is one of the best schools in the country."

       "They're still homophobic."

"Can't you take anything serious for even a minute? Don't you get it, Parry? There's a possibility that I could leave the school."

"Yeah, I do get it," I said. "But what do you want me to say? That of course I want you to stay? That I'll only have a massive breakdown if you leave because you're the only person I have in my life right now? Sure, I have my friends. Sure, I apparently have my grandpa but I'm not as close to any of them. I can't open up to any of them like I open up to you. And yes, I know it sounds selfish that I don't want to leave just because I only want you to stay for me and--"

"Whoa, how is that selfish?" Jules asked as he walked over and sat down beside me on my bed. "I would be kind of hurt if you didn't want me to stay for you. You know how I have that soccer game on Monday? My parents told me if I win, they'll consider letting me stay."

"Just for winning the soccer game?" I asked.

"It's one of the reasons why they chose this school for me," Jules said. "If they could see how well I'm, hopefully, doing on the soccer team, then they won't see too many reasons for me to leave."

I felt like I really was part of the reason his parents wanted Jules to go to another school, especially because of the prank I pulled. If I pulled another one, they might see me in an even worse light.

I couldn't believe I was going to say this but I had to be on my best behaviour for the rest of the weekend.
