Chapter 6

The grade tens and elevens of the school was called to the auditorium for an announcement and I basically already knew what it was. They make the same one around this time of year so it would actually be a surprise if it wasn't what I thought it was.

That, and the last time I got in trouble and was waiting for Mr. McCabe to show up, I saw the information about the announcement.

While we were waiting for Mr. McCabe and Mrs. Kinlaw, the headmistress for the girls, to make the announcement, I felt like showing Jules a lot of affection because the way he listened to my problems a while ago made me feel a lot better.

I wasn't even being too affectionate with him. I was just holding his hand and occasionally kissing him but apparently, it was enough to get Maple annoyed. "Can you two go even an hour without kissing each other?" she asked. "It's sickening."

"Then go sit somewhere else," Jules said. "Nobody else is complaining about it."

"Because I'm single and it makes me feel lonely seeing you two in love," Maple said.

"Uh, we're all single except for Parry and Jules," Everly pointed out.

"Then why aren't you complaining with me?" Maple asked.

"If you find it so annoying, then why don't you get a boyfriend or a girlfriend?" Jules asked.

"Hey, Everly, wanna go out?" Maple asked.

"No offense, but you're not my type," Everly said. "I'd rather date someone a little less... annoying."

Maple frowned before looking at Mack and Mateus. "So, any of you two want to have such an honour and go out with me?"

"Did you hear that?" Mack asked Mateus, pretending not to have heard Maple.

"No, I didn't hear a thing," Mateus said. "Must have been the wind."

Maple scowled, crossing her arms and leaning back in her chair. "Great. You know, I thought it would be easier finding a partner being pansexual but nobody wants to date me."

"Here's a tip," I said. "Don't date your friends. You'll find someone, just not in our friend group."

"That's a horrible tip, you hypocrite," Maple said. "You're dating your best friend. You can't tell me not to date someone in our friend group."

"He doesn't have to tell you because none of our friends want to date you," Jules said, so Maple punched his arm.

Mr. McCabe and Mrs. Kinlaw finally got the announcement started, both of them standing at the podium which was enough to signal for everyone to be quiet. Once everyone had stopped talking, Mr. McCabe started talking. "Every year, the school always does a certain trip. The grade nines go by themselves, the grade tens and elevens go together, and the grade twelves go on their own. I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about."

Quite a few people started groaning, not wanting to go on yet another camping trip. I was actually excited to go. I did love the outdoors, and I definitely didn't mind being away from electronics for a few days. After all, the only people I talk to are at the boarding school with me.

The only part I didn't like was not being able to listen to music.

"Quiet down," Mrs. Kinlaw said. "Camping will be a good experience and we already have a lot planned for it. We'll be heading out on Monday and we'll be coming back on Friday."

"Everyone will be sharing a tent with their current roommate," Mr. McCabe said. "I can see some of you are disappointed about that so when we arrive at the campsite, you will be allowed to switch with someone else if you both want it, but you must inform me or Mrs. Kinlaw. And no, boys and girls aren't allowed to share a tent. You'll be set up on opposite sides of the campground."

I leaned in towards Jules. "It's a good thing we're in a same sex relationship then."

"Mr. Hathaway," Mr. McCabe said, causing me to look back to the front. "I may not have been able to separate you and Mr. Redgrave with your dorms, but I can separate you two when we're camping so just please be respectful."

"Respectful of what?" Jules asked me in a whispered tone as Mr. McCabe continued talking to everyone and not just me.

"Translation, he doesn't want us doing the dirty in a tent," I said, my voice as low. "What a shame."

Jules just rolled his eyes and gently elbowed my side.

The announcement didn't take long since all that they had to talk about now was things we were and weren't allowed to bring on the trip. Any other rules were going to be established before we leave and again when we arrive at the campsite.

After being dismissed, everyone got up to leave but Mr. McCabe called me and Jules over. I swear, if he was going to tell us we were being separated anyway, I was going to refuse to go on the camping trip.

"Don't worry, this isn't about me splitting you two up," Mr. McCabe said once we got to him, as if he was reading my mind. "There are other students I'm more worried about. Anyway, just because we're not going to be at the school, it doesn't mean you can do whatever you want, Hathaway. It's a school trip so I expect you to behave."

"Of course I will," I said. "I'm currently in a bet about me going a month without getting in trouble and I have a week left to go. I am very determined to win it."

"Oh, I'm glad you're taking a bet more seriously than you not getting in trouble," Mr. McCabe said. "I am serious, though. No trouble."

       "No trouble," I repeated.

"And Jules, I only called you here so I can tell you to please help him stay out of trouble," Mr. McCabe said. "I noticed that most of the time, you're the only one he'll listen to."

       "Yeah, of course," Jules said.

"Thank you," Mr. McCabe said. "Hathaway, I really do expect you to be on your best behaviour."

"Yeah, sure, but do I really annoy you so much that you have to refer to me as my last name?" I asked.

Mr. McCabe ignored me as he walked away. I guess that was a yes.

As he was walking away, I noticed Malcolm and his group of friends standing nearby. Malcolm was giving me a smirk, and it was not one I liked at all. Then again, I didn't like anything about him but this smirk had to be the most.

       "He's planning something," I said.

       "Who?" Jules asked.

"Malcolm," I said. "He has that smirk on his face. Should I bring my pranking kit just to be prepared?"

"No," Jules said. "Just ignored him. Whatever he's planning, he'll get in trouble from Mr. McCabe. I don't need you doing some act of revenge on the trip."

       "No promises," I said.
