Chapter 24

I hated that two days ago when I told Jules I'd be up to go to the special place off campus, I didn't know that I was going to just feel like complete crap the next day. I couldn't leave my room at all. And it wasn't like I didn't want to go out. I really did.

       I just... couldn't.

And I hated it. I knew staying in my dorm all day would only make me feel worse because I just needed fresh air or a change of scenery, but I couldn't leave my room no matter how hard I tried.

At least Jules understood it. He was willing to go down to the cafeteria to get me food and drinks every time I was hungry and he did stay with me most of the time. He just had a short soccer team meeting in the morning but after that, he stayed with me the whole time.

I wasn't looking forward to this week at school. It was hard enough for me to leave my dorm. Now I had to leave my dorm to attend class.

At least Jules was in all of my classes so I wouldn't feel alone or anything.

And today, there was a schoolwide assembly during first period so I could sleep a bit more.

I mean, so I could pay attention to the assembly. I totally wasn't going to fall asleep during it at all.

When Jules and I got to the auditorium for the assembly, we sat in the seats we normally sat in whenever we had an assembly. I immediately slightly leaned back into Jules, wanting to fall asleep already.

Shortly after we sat down, Mateus and Mack sat down, followed by Everly and then Maple. "You know what I hope this assembly is about?" Maple asked. "Malcolm getting expelled."

"I doubt there's going to be a schoolwide assembly just to announce that Malcolm is expelled," Jules said.

"One can only hope," Maple said.

I, too, was hoping this was an assembly to announce that Malcolm was expelled but obviously, that wasn't the case.

It did take some time for the assembly to start because Mr. McCabe and Mrs. Kinlaw had to until everyone was here and in the meantime, I tried falling asleep.

       I couldn't.

So much for me trying to sleep during the assembly.

Mr. McCabe and Mrs. Kinlaw stood behind the podium on the stage, immediately getting everyone's attention. When the chatter in the auditorium died down, Mrs. Kinlaw began talking to discuss what this assembly was about. "I assume you're all wondering why you're here for an assembly under such short notice," she said. "The superintendent has chosen Fyodor Academy, as well as only a few others, to participate in a new disciplinary program."

       Disciplinary program?

Why did we need a disciplinary program? Mr. McCabe and Mrs. Kinlaw always handled things appropriately and it wasn't like this school was known for troublesome kids.

Okay, sure, I wasn't the most... well-behaved person with my constant pranks and shenanigans but I doubt the superintendent knew about it. And even if she did, would she really make Fyodor Academy participate in a disciplinary program just because of me?

"This disciplinary program will see if various schools in this district will improve their academic standings," Mr. McCabe said. "And to see that the program will be achieved to the superintendent's standards, she has sent each school a representative to see it through. The representative sent here will be acting as an assistant headmaster and will take over various duties Mrs. Kinlaw and I normally handle."
