Chapter 2
"You know, you don't have to help me out," I said to Jules as I used a trash picker to put a chip bag in the garbage bag I was carrying. I didn't know how many chip bags and granola bar wrappers and coffee cups I had picked up because apparently, people were too lazy to walk just a few more feet to a garbage can.
I was starting to think garbage duty was worse than detention. I just didn't know people were this lazy.
"The only reason you're in this mess is because of me," Jules said. "The least I could do is help you out."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "What? It isn't your fault. If Malcolm didn't lie to you, then I wouldn't have felt the need to get revenge. And don't you dare say that I wouldn't have had to if you didn't believe Malcolm. He's the captain. Of course you had no choice but believe him."
"Okay, but I still feel bad," Jules said. "You could have gotten a punishment much worse than garbage duty."
"I doubt it," I said. "Mr. McCabe has tried all the possible ones and nothing stopped me from getting in trouble yet. Well, nothing except you making a bet because I like bets too."
"And one that you're going to lose," Jules said.
"Ouch. I'm glad you have so much faith in me."
"It's not about me having faith. It's about me wanting you to lose so you can buy me dinner, and so I won't have to tell my parents that we're eloping. That's going to make them really mad."
"Exactly why I am going to be so determined to win."
Jules rolled his eyes. "You're hopeless."
"But you still love me."
"That, I do." Jules then gave me a quick peck on my cheek before we had to get back to, ugh, garbage duty. At least my wonderful boyfriend was willing to help me out.
Then again, he was supposed to be studying for his pre-calculus and he hated studying, so he would rather do anything else.
Besides, we were almost done anyway. We just had to finish the pathway by the main building.
"Wow, this is a sight to see," I heard someone say, so I looked over to see Jules' sister Maple walk over, followed by our group of friends, Everly, Mack, and Mateus. "Could it be? Parry actually doing some good deeds?"
I snorted. "No. Apparently, detention doesn't work for me anymore so I am on garbage duty three times a week for the next two months."
"What exactly did you do?" Everly asked.
"Nothing too bad," I said. "Malcolm caused Jules to be late to soccer practice yesterday, so I thought I would be an amazing boyfriend and get revenge. Just the old paint-above-the-door prank."
"Even though I don't agree with him getting in trouble," Jules said.
"Oh, shush," I said, right as I picked up the last piece of garbage, so I tied off the garbage bag. "You secretly are very grateful I did what I did. Malcolm had it coming."
"Tell me about it," Mack muttered under his breath.
I looked over at him. "Are you okay?"
Mack sighed. "Yeah, I'm fine. It's just... Malcolm found out my dead name, and now that's all he's calling me."
"I'm sorry, he what?" I asked, trying my best not to get angry. Malcolm just crossed a line that should never be crossed. Ever.
