Chapter 29
Fyodor Academy never felt so liberating after the disciplinary program had ended. I no longer had to worry about my friends getting in trouble because let's face it, I was going to get in trouble sooner or later.
I was happy Jules and I were no longer mad at each other. It was so hard not talking to him, not only because he was my best friend and my boyfriend but because he was also my roommate.
Us ignoring each other just made everything so awkward.
Jules and I were lying on my bed, watching a movie on his laptop. Earlier today, he got a bunch of snacks from the cafeteria and brought it up to our room so we were also pigging out on the food.
"So you know how we should celebrate the program ending?" I asked.
"I swear, if you saw pull a prank..." Jules said.
"You know, I suddenly don't think we should celebrate the program ending."
Jules chuckled. "Of course."
My cell phone started ringing so I grabbed it off of the nightstand. Once I saw who was calling, I placed my phone back on the nightstand.
"Who was that?" Jules asked.
"My mom. I'm not interested in talking to her right now."
"Why not?"
I hesitated before pausing the movie. "You know what my parents are like. They don't answer my texts or calls but as soon as they need something from me, that's when they start paying attention to me."
"So... What does she want?"
"My grandpa sent her the research I've been working on," I said. "He wants me to work on it with some scientists and figured my mom was the best bet. You know, since she's one of the smartest people alive."
"Is it this cancer research you've never told me about yet?" Jules asked. "You just said it was the reason why the program ended."
"Okay, to fill you in, Mr. Clutterbuck and the superintendent weren't too impressed with my pranks," I said. "Which was my plan. They thought that I was just dragging down the school's grading curve and they though it would be better without me."
Jules furrowed his eyebrows. "Seriously? But you're the smartest student at this school."
"Yeah, well, this is the people who created the disciplinary program," I said. "Anyway, since they care so much about the school's grade average and their reputation, I showed them my cancer research. Which can stop the cancer from spreading. It's not an exact cure but... It's a start. It's easier to treat cancerous cells that aren't moving."
"Wait, are you for real?" Jules asked. "Parry, that's amazing. And I know you don't want to talk to your parents whenever they just need something, but you should talk to your mom about this."
"Don't need to," I said, turning the movie back on. "She has the research. She can do what she wants with it."
"But... It's your research," Jules said.
I shrugged. "It's still being used with a bunch of scientists. They don't need me."
"It's still your research, Paz," Jules said. "You know how it works. You should be with the scientists, developing it even more."
I didn't reply. Instead, I just kept my attention on the movie. My cell phone beeped with a new message so I sighed as I grabbed it, knowing the message was from my mom.
It was.
Call me back as soon as you get this. We need to discuss your research.
I was going to reply but my fingers were hovering over the keypad on the screen, not knowing what to type.
Jules paused the movie. "If that's your mom, just meet up with her. You need to be part of it."
"I don't need to do anything except for look good. And pull pranks. And pull pranks while looking good."
"Parry..."
"Fine," I muttered. "I'll be a part of it."
"Don't sound too excited."
I sent my mom a text message. Can we at least discuss it in person? Not over a phone call?
I placed my cell phone on the nightstand, knowing that my mom probably wasn't going to reply for a long time.
That was how things went.
I scooted closer to Jules, resting my head on his chest and wrapping my arms around his waist. I was glad Jules and I were no longer fighting but that didn't stop me from feeling like crap. Again.
"Have you been feeling okay?" Jules asked.
I sighed. "Not really. I just feel... I don't know. Empty, I guess. It's weird. I hated the disciplinary program but me trying to find a way to end it gave me something to distract me. And now... I'm back to feeling horrible."
"I think that's another reason why you should work with your mom and the other scientists with your research," Jules said. "It might help distract you."
"Yeah, that's true," I said. "I just have to wait for my mom to text me back. Which probably won't happen for a while. You know how it is."
Jules closed his laptop and placed it on the nightstand. "Alright, let's go," he said, getting off of the bed and pulling me up with him.
I furrowed my eyebrows. "Where are we going? Are we going to pull pranks?"
Jules didn't reply which made me very curious. Normally, he was quick to deny anything that had to do with pranks.
He didn't this time.
Either he was trying to keep it a secret of what we were doing or I actually converted him to the prank side.
I really hoped it was the latter.
Jules intertwined our hands together, leading me out of the dorm room. He led me to the science building, all the way to the science lab.
"Okay, what are we doing here?" I asked. "Because no offence but I don't think you'd willingly come here."
"I would if it mean helping you feel better," Jules said. "Go get it."
"Get what?"
"Your prank box. I know you hide one in here."
I was silent for a bit, trying to figure out how he figured out my secret. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Paz, you... When I was helping you with your last experiment, you told me to put my phone in your locker. Your prank box is kept in the locker."
"Oops. Wait... Why do you want my prank box?" Was I right? Was he actually being converted to the prank side?
"Well, I want to help you feel better," Jules said. "And help distract you while you wait for your mom to reply. And I know how much you love pranks so... We're going to pull one."
I couldn't help but smile at Jules. He was willing to pull a prank with me, something he kept trying to stop me from doing, just to help me feel better.
I couldn't have asked for a better boyfriend.
