Summary: SCP-142 is a slot machine from the 1940s, with a modified coin slot that accepts any item able to fit in a 5 by 2 centimeters cylindrical space. Once a bet is made, i.e. once some number of objects is inserted into the slot, the machine is able to be played. Upon losing, the bet is lost with no way of getting it back, not even opening the machine. Upon winning, the machine will dispense 2-200 identical copies of the input bet, depending on where the slots land. At Stage 1 of human interaction with 142, subjects express a mild desire to place bets, as well as a diminished sense of the passage of time. Continued betting for half an hour moves the subject on to Stage 2, where they will be compelled to bet more and more with larger quantities of objects, in addition to believing they're winning more often than they actually are. Stage 3 begins once the subject runs out of things to bet with. They will gain a strong aversion to not only 142 itself, but the action of putting anything through any hole, for fear of "losing/wasting" said things. This obviously hinders the subject's ability to function in their daily life, as "putting things through holes" includes activities such as walking through doorways and eating, among less extreme examples. This inevitably leads to the subject starving to death unless compelled to eat or fed via other means. Removal of subjects in Stage 1 results in recovery within 1 hour, but removal during Stage 2 always leads to Stage 3, which is permanent.
Usefulness: There's no reason to use this to duplicate items, as we already have a tree that duplicates items, and 142 has the potential to take what we want to duplicate anyways. Not useful, since there's a better, more reliable method of duplicating items already available to the Foundation.
Against 682: Maybe forcing 682 to play this will result in it being unable to leave its containment cell, due to its aversion to going through holes. He may also starve himself, but that's unlikely to be a permanent solution. My money's on the aversion to holes taking effect, but I've never been much of a gambling man.
