ALENA

I’m lying in bed watching my mom stare at me in disbelief. Her eyes are huge, and her mouth is open. My throat feels so dry. I keep trying to clear it but it’s not working.

Before I opened my eyes, I heard my parents talking. At first, things they said were fuzzy. It was hard to concentrate and hear them but as time went on, it got better.

I watched my mom start crying. Everything that happened came back to me. The rogues rushing through the trees. It happened so fast. We were all having fun, laughing, and goofing around and the next minute, everyone was fighting. My first instinct was to get all the younger children to safety. The only thing I could think of at the time was to have them climb up into the trees. They would be safe there until my parents came with the warriors.

One of the kids took off running, I tried to stop him, but he was gone so fast. I turned and watched several rogues coming my way. All the guys I go to school with, stood in front of me and started fighting. Damon was closest to me, and he was killing them so fast, but they just kept coming.

So many came at once that occasionally one slipped through and tried to attack me. Everything my parents and uncles taught me came into my mind. I stayed focused. The knife that I got as a present from my uncle, I always kept it on or near me. I’ve known there were threats made against me, Uncle Lucas told me that even if I never need it, it's better to be safe than unprepared.

I fought so hard. I killed several wolves; some were big but none of them expected me to be strong enough. They obviously underestimated my parents. Sucks for them.

Even though I fought hard, I still managed to get a few injuries. Glancing at them, I knew they weren’t that bad, but they were bleeding a lot. My adrenaline was pumping so fast that I didn’t feel any pain, but I knew it was going to hurt like hell later.

When I saw my dad coming with all the warriors, I knew it would all be over soon. My father is the biggest and strongest wolf out there. He can fight off several wolves at once and act like it was nothing. The definition of badass.

When everyone saw reinforcements coming, it gave them the extra power to fight. Their numbers started dropping and it was only a matter of time before it was over. I felt relieved because I was slowly getting tired. I’ll never admit it though.

I looked over and I saw my mom. I saw blood dripping from her head and watching her drop to her knees and screaming in pain. I didn’t know what was happening, but I knew it scared me. I’ve never felt so much fear when I saw that wolf coming at her. She wasn’t looking. She had no idea he was there. It didn’t look like her powers were working and I’m guessing it was from the pain she was experiencing. All I could do was run. There was no way in hell I was going to watch my mother be killed. The thought of growing up without her made me run faster.

Right before he reached her, I slammed into his side causing him to miss her. He was the biggest wolf I fought today. He was strong but he was fighting, letting his anger get the best of him. I did everything I could to focus, take my emotions out of it. I’m not going to lie; I wasn’t sure if I was able to win this one. He was thrashing around trying to kill me. His teeth kept grazing my skin. I knew I had to do something. I repositioned the knife in my hand and stabbed him in the neck. By the time he collapsed on me, the pressure of his weight, crushing me along with all the blood I lost, I felt myself getting weak. I couldn’t breathe and my vision was fading. I could hear several people screaming my name before I slipped away.

“Oh my God, I can’t believe you're awake. Do you remember what happened? How do you feel? Are you in any pain?” She slammed me with questions. I wasn’t sure what to answer first.

“Yes.” Is all I said.

By now, I looked past my mom and saw Aryanna, Jace, Aunt Jessica and Aunt Emily standing in the doorway.

“Alena!” Aryanna screamed.

She ran across the room, practically throwing herself on me. She wrapped her arms around me, and I could hear her crying.

“I’m so happy that you're ok.” She sobbed into my chest.

“You're hurting me.” I groaned.

She quickly let go, apologizing for hurting me. I couldn’t do anything but smile at her.

My mom helped me sit up in bed. She reached over and grabbed the glass of water asking me if I wanted any. I nodded my head, so she gave me a sip. My throat was sore, so the water felt refreshing.

“My throat hurts.” I whispered.

“They had a tube down your throat when they first brought you into the hospital. After several hours, you were able to breathe on your own, so they took it out. It should feel better in a couple days.” My mom said.

There was a knock on the door and Dr Molly walked in. When she saw me, she her expression went from surprised to relieved and smiled pressing her hand to her chest.

“It's nice to see you awake. You scared me for a while.” She said.

She asked me a series of questions and checked my reflexes. She looked at the monitors and wrote everything down in my chart.

While she was checking me out, I noticed all the bandages and I was almost afraid to ask.

“How bad is it?” I whispered.

“How bad is what? Your injuries? We stitched you up, you're going to have some impressive battle scars to tell with your story but with what you experienced, it’s not that bad. You will heal. I don’t expect any permanent damage to your arms so with some physical therapy, you should be as good as new. My main concern was your body was without oxygen for a while but from the conversation we are having, I don’t notice any brain damage.” She said.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. It hurt like hell with the tightness in my chest but I’m so grateful that I’m going to be ok.

“Where is Daddy?” I asked.

I watched my mom tense up. I know I heard him in my room before waking up, so I know he’s alive.

“He’s gathering the people responsible for this attack. I’m supposed to meet him in front of the pack house soon to confront them. I’m going to be issuing their sentences once I’m sure they are guilty.” She said.

“I want to come with you.” I said.

I started to get out of bed, swinging my legs over the edge. As I went to pull the covers off, my mom tried to stop me.

“Alena, your body has been through a lot. You need to rest. I’ll take care of it, don’t worry. Once I’m done, your father and I will come straight here.” She said.

“NO! Those bastards tried to kill me. I want to stand before everyone so they can see they failed. What better surprise than both of us walking out together.” I said strongly.

I stood up. I felt a little dizzy at first. I held on to the side of the bed trying to keep my balance. I held my head high and took a few steps. As I got to the end of the bed, Aryanna grabbed my hand and helped support me. I slightly leaned against her and walked to the bathroom.

“Is anyone going to get me clothes, I'd rather not go out there with my butt hanging out.” I said.

I heard them laughing at me.

Before I closed the bathroom door, I asked my mom if she told my dad I was awake. She said no and I told her not to tell him. I wanted it to be a surprise.
