Nikei opened the door of his rented house, yawning as he walked in. It had been a long day of him gathering interviews from the students of Hope's Peak Academy, and he needed to write up the article next.

As he opened the door, he noticed that a sweet smell was coming from the kitchen. He smiled as he closed the door behind him, knowing exactly who would be making food when it wasn't even close to suppertime.

"Yo, Mikado. I'm back." He called over as he hung up his jacket on a coat rack next to his boyfriend's cloak. He didn't hear a response, so he walked over to the kitchen to make sure that the wizard didn't accidentally drown himself in the sink or something stupid like that.

When he entered the kitchen, he heard the sound of the stove fan, quickly realizing that Mikado couldn't hear him because of it. Speaking of the wizard, he was wearing baggy, grey pants with only an apron covering his torso. Either he didn't expect Nikei to come home yet or he was hoping to fluster him.

The journalist smiled as he stepped up behind Mikado, lazily wrapping his arms around the wizard's shoulders as he looked over to see what Mikado was cooking. It seemed like there was icing being mixed in the bowl, and Nikei assumed that Mikado was making some cake.

Upon the smaller boy wrapping himself around his shoulders, Mikado suddenly took notice of his surroundings. "Ah, doll. When did you get home so soon?" He purred, reaching up a hand to stroke Nikei's cheek. "I thought you'd get back after the cake had finished cooling."

So it WAS cake after all. "I finished my interviews early. Nothing more to it." The journalist replied. "But hey, I'd never turn down a bit of cake."

"Based on your sweet tooth, I'd expect not." The wizard giggled.

"What flavor?" Nikei asked, playing with the wizard's hair.

"Red Velvet with cream cheese frosting. The cake is in the oven now, it should be out soon." Glancing over at the oven, the timer read 1:15. Only a little longer.

"I can get it out for you if you want," Nikei offered.

"I'd appreciate that." The blonde smiled, before continuing, "Could you taste this icing? I want your opinion."

"Yeah sure, lemme just-" As Nikei reached down to snag a bit in his finger, Mikado turned to offer him a spoon with the frosting on it, completely missing his hand and smearing it on his face.

A few seconds passed as the boys processed what had just happened. Once their previous actions had registered, Mikado bursted out laughing and Nikei just stared at him with a look of bewilderment on his face.

"How did that even-?" Nikei asked, though not to anyone in particular.

"A-Ahaha, I'm so sorry about that, sweetheart!" Mikado managed to get out between his giggles.

"Pfft, no you fucking aren't!" Nikei exclaimed, bursting out laughing. "And why the hell are you wearing an apron instead of a shirt in the first place?!"

"Well, I have my reasons." The taller boy chuckled, managing to quickly stick the spoon into the journalist's mouth this time. Nikei let out a muffled little squeak of surprise, then his expression melted sweetly as he savoured the icing's flavour. "That good, huh?" Mikado smiled.

After a few more seconds, Nikei took the spoon out of Mikado's hand and his own mouth, wearing a fake annoyed expression. "H-Hey, I told you not to do that last time you made cake!" He whined, his face covered with blush.

"Forgive me, doll, but your expressions are too adorable for me to just let be." The wizard replied, his body completely relaxed as the journalist continued cuddling him. After a few seconds of Nikei burying his face in his shoulder, the blonde asked "Do you want more icing?"

"...Yes please." Nikei quietly replied. Mikado took the spoon back from Nikei and scooped out another bit of icing, feeding it to the journalist. Nikei accepted it with no complaints or comedic accidents this time.

Mikado knew very well that his boyfriend spoke with both truth and lies intertwined, but he cherished the moments where the journalist's defences came down and he let his pure, honest self show. The wizard was trying to train Nikei's mind to accept that he didn't need to lie to protect himself around his loved ones, and it seemed he was getting through to the smaller boy after almost three years.

Mikado put the bowl down on the counter and gently nudged Nikei off of him, putting on a pair of oven mitts. "Please stand back. I'll get the cake out." He warned his lover, and he opened the oven and took out the red velvet cake to cool it down.

As he placed the cake on a cooling rack, he turned around and spotted Nikei nearly drooling at the sight of the pastry. "Patience, doll." He joking chastised, then began to ice the cake.

When the icing had covered the cake, the two of them went to the couch to watch TV as it cooled down. Instead of writing an article, Nikei was seated on Mikado's lap with a blanket over him, leaning on the wizard's chest.

Mikado knew that he would later see Nikei's tsundere and defensive personality wash away when he was faced with the baked good, those were always a good motivation for the energetic and unhurt side of him to come out. Hoping that the journalist would be up for cuddling afterwards, Mikado watched the clock as the cake cooled down.
