Lounging on the couch, Mikado tried to stave off his loneliness to the best of his ability. It had been years since he had graduated high school, found someone to share a house with, and gotten a job, but he was always lonely in his adulthood.
His classmates at Hope's Peak Academy had always brushed him off or dismissed him, so when he ended up getting an at-home job as a hacker, he didn't have any friends to leave the house for anyway. The only one who he could consider his friend, or perhaps more, was a girl named Sora.
She had attended Hope's Peak Academy, a social butterfly of the group that shooed Mikado away as well, but she warmed up to him after she agreed to split the rent with him and let him stay. Her job took her out of the house every day, but she always came back to a warm supper of Mikado's creation. Their relationship had been getting better over time.
And today again, Mikado had finished his work for the day and received his paycheque for the week. All he had to do now was read his book and wait for Sora to come back home. He knew that it might take a while, but he was already used to it.
An hour later, the front door opened and Sora came in. Mikado bookmarked his page and went to the front door, but noticed that the girl looked very bedraggled. Not to mention that she wasn't supposed to be home right now. Any theories about her needing to quickly grab something from home were quashed as she locked the door behind her.
"Ms. Sora, isn't this your lunch break? You're not supposed to be here," he cautiously asked, hoping that she wasn't in a mood to throw him out a nearby window. Sora looked up at him with a tired glare, but she sighed and looked down as she dragged herself to the living room. Mikado followed her like a puppy, worried about what had her like this.
Sora ended up putting his book on the floor before faceplanting onto the couch, making herself comfy as she sulked. Mikado hovered nearby, wondering what to do. "Ms. Sora? Are you alright?" he finally decided to ask.
Her voice came out muffled by the couch cushions, "Let me die in peace, Mikado." An uncomfortable silence hung in the air for a few moment, then she continued, "They did drug testing today, and we were down three people. Not to mention that my boss has been getting on everyone's cases all week."
"Ah, I see. So, you're not going back," he assumed, and she let out a muffled noise of confirmation. "If that's the case, then why don't we just relax a little? Have a little snack, make a blanket fort, take a nap...things like that!"
Sora grumbled as she pulled herself off the couch. "Let's just skip straight to the blanket fort and nap. It's been a rough week," she agreed, beginning to walk towards her bedroom. Excited at his idea of the blanket fort happening, Mikado followed her. He only hoped that he would be allowed inside when it was done.
The two of them didn't sleep in the same bedroom, but Mikado knew that letting her sleep in her own room would make it less likely that she would be grumpy. Sora entered her bedroom and took the pillow from its place, leaning it up against a sturdy surface.
"Hm... I'll go bring any extra pillows we have," Mikado offered, and he quickly left the room. By the time he returned with his own pillow, spare pillows from a sale, and couch cushions, Sora had already taken off the blankets on her bed. He stepped around the blanket pile with the pillows.
"Thanks, let's set them up around the edges," Sora suggested, "and maybe one in the middle as a 'structure pole' of sorts." With those words, she took the pile of pillows from Mikado.
After about twenty minutes of trying to position to pillows in a way that the blankets don't crush the fort, their blanket fort was finally completed. They both took a step back and began to marvel at their completed masterpiece for a few moments.
"I'm gonna go inside," Sora decided, and she got on the bed and crawled into the space. Mikado watched anxiously as she shifted a bit to get comfortable, but to his relief, the fort didn't fall on her. "Hey, are you coming inside or not?" she questioned.
"Oh, yes, hold on," he replied, surprised that she was allowing him inside. He still didn't know the extent of her warming up to him yet, but he was further relieved nonetheless. When Sora was tired, her barbs tended to come out.
The inside of the blanket fort was soft and warm, more than what Mikado was used to. Or perhaps was it because he wasn't alone in there? Either way, he wiggled inside and made himself comfortable, laying on his front like Sora was.
The white-haired girl took a glance at him, then lowered her head into her arms and nuzzled into them. Mikado's mask smiled as he watched her body grow still, save for her slow breathing. She was pretty when she was calm, he had long since decided. Her long hair draped over her resting form as she sank into sleep.
Sleep didn't sound like a bad idea to him, he had a rough week with work too. Mikado opted to not pass up the opportunity he was given, and rested his head in his arms as well. He turned his head so he could see Sora's face, peaceful and asleep. That was the last thing he saw before he gave into sleep as well.
