"Babe, I am telling you now that I literally cannot take any more of it. I swear- if he even comes up to me tomorrow and asks one more time about this article, I will cut my arms off in protest." Olivia complained as she paced around the living room.
Spencer has been listening to her rant for about twenty minutes now. It started off with a simple, "Yeah, work was fine" but quickly spiraled when he let her know that their five years together let him know she wasn't "fine". Though he originally planned for a romantic night in to spend some quality time together, he knew she needed a listening ear right now. He just didn't expect that it would go so far but this new editor at the LA Tribune was clearly bothering Liv and he figured that the more he let her talk it out, the sooner they could get back to their night.
"Baby you gotta tell him if it's bothering you. It aint gonna get better by you keeping all of this in. Stick up for your writing and be the bad ass you are. Why don't you try with me? Say what you would want to say tomorrow and maybe you'll feel less nervous or annoyed when if he does come up to you." Spencer replied hesitantly.
"Uh, sure. I would probably just tell him something like: Derek, I know that you see things differently than me, but I think my article is great. The experiences of these black athletes and their transition out of the league and the counseling offered to them is not the same as the white athletes. I get that as a white guy who probably never has had to experience the level of racial disparity----""We were doing so well" Spencer cut her off.
"Too much?" Liv grimaced.
"Just a bit. Look Liv, just go in and do what you've always done. Help raise the voices of those people try to quiet. You writing has always spoken for itself so don't let some clown bring you down. You're dope and cant let him try to make you think otherwise." Spencer spoke sweetly as Olivia blushed at her boyfriend's sweet words. After taking a breath and looking back at their dining room, Liv finally took notice of the full plates, candles and the chocolate cake at the table.
Immediately feeling her heart sink a little out of guilt, she looked back at Spencer with a sad expression.
"Oh, babe...I'm so sorry, I've been complaining this whole time and didn't even see what you did. I know our schedules have been crazy these last few weeks and Im taking away from our time."
"Don't even stress babe. I know you needed to talk this out and I got you. No matter what." Spencer replied earnestly."Ugh. What did I do to deserve you? Smart, sexy and makes a mean chocolate cake." Liv said with a small lip bite.
"You know...all this talk about work made me hungry for dessert" she added, slowly moving closer to the couch Spencer was sitting on and pressing gentle kisses to his neck.
"Well the cake is there and ready but I'm gonna be real with you and say I really hope you mean the other kind of dessert." Spencer spoke with a grin.
"Oh, I definitely mean the other kind." Olivia replied with a lustful look as Spencer's hands began to roam her lower back before landing on her ass with a gentle squeeze.
Their lips finally found each other and they started to get lost in each other before Liv stopped and spoke again.
"I just still cant believe he called my article, "too much". It's like he was trying to just say it was "too black" without saying it." She said in an exasperated tone before removing herself and walking to the table to eat cake and stress eat leaving a confused Spencer to throw his head back and sigh."Guess its back to the other dessert" he mumbled lowly.
------------------The next day-----------
Spencer walked into the office of the LA Tribune on a mission. He was not gonna let this slide and was over it.
"Hi ma'am, can you point me to Derek Green's office?" Spencer said to the older receptionist.
"Right over there on the left, second door down" she said cheerfully.Spencer thanked her and walked over the office, knocking once before walking right into the office.
"Hey man, are you Derek?" Spencer spoke with his annoyance barely being hidden."Yeah, I'm Derek. You're Spencer James, right? What can I do for you?" Derek answered in confusion.
"I'm Olivia's boyfriend. And I just wanna say that I had a great damn sex life before you came and started making her annoyed and self-conscious. So cut the shit and stop telling my girlfriend that her articles are too much. Go, I don't know, write about new coffee shops on Rodeo Drive or something but leave her alone." Spencer got out in one breathe before walking out.--------Later that night---------
Spencer heard the keys in the door from the kitchen and immediately got nervous. He knew that Liv could handle her own and wouldn't exactly be thrilled about his unannounced visit to her job. Though he had good intentions, he braced himself for what was to come.
"Spencer James, are you kidding me?!" Liv yelled as soon as she came through the door. Approaching the kitchen, she began to mumble and all Spencer could make out was "ridiculous", "not helpless" and "kick your ass". It was all he needed to hear to speak up and turn when he finally felt her behind him
"Baby, I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have come but I just hate seeing you all worked up over this guy. I was just trying to help." He said apologetically with remorseful eyes that she couldn't help but get lost in."Ugh. You're lucky I love you. I can't even be that made when you give me that look. Spence, I know you didn't mean any harm but you can't do that. It's my problem and more importantly my job. Thank you for saying sorry though. I will say though, as misguided as you were and as awkward as it was for my editor to come in and apologize for interrupting my sex life- you're definitely still in trouble for that one by the way- it made him apologize for not supporting me and offering constructive criticism. He even complimented my writing and said we could run it as is." Liv offered with a small smile.
"That's great, babe. I'm proud of you. And like I said, I'm sorry. I just don't like you seeing you doubt how amazing you really are." Spencer said as he approached her and placed his hands on her waist."Well, thank you. It helps when I have you in my corner. Kind of hard to not have your light rub off on me." Olivia smiled at him as she wrapped her arms around his neck and leaned in for a kiss.
Spencer pulled away and said with a small smirk, "If I knew having an awkward blow up at your boss was all it took, I would've done this weeks ago."Liv laughed hysterically and pushed him playfully, "Shut up! You're still in trouble for bringing up our sex life but you're cute so I'll let it slide this time."
"Girl you don't have to tell me twice." Spencer joked as he picked her up and lead her up the stairs. Olivia couldn't help but laugh.
"I love you" she let out with a wide smile.
"I love you more" he replied before kissing her and closing their bedroom door so they could make up for lost time.
