Humming along to her playlist, Olivia put the back of her earring in and then stared in her vanity mirror a little longer. Taking a deep breath and mentally preparing herself for what was quickly approaching, she knew that no amount of deep breaths would make it any easier. It had been exactly a year and so much in her life had changed that it sometimes made her head spin. It isn't easy to move on from someone who you had envisioned your entire future with. It's even harder to continue pretending as though it hadn't been the hardest decision she'd ever had make in her entire life. Losing Spencer was basically like losing a piece of herself and it took a lot of time to heal from that. Or at the very least, begin to try and heal from that.
The break-up was gut wrenching and wasn't one that anyone saw coming. In the weeks following the split, as word slowly got around to their family and friends there was the look of shock on each person's face that eventually became an expected part of the awful conversation. If only they had been privy to just how toxic and complicated their relationship had been in the four months prior to officially ending things. That last argument that sealed the deal was one that had been a long time coming but it still hadn't eased the pain of it all.
It really all started when Spencer got injured towards the end of his second year in the league. A catch that usually was a cake walk turned into the very move that damaged his knee and caused him to sit out for the rest of that season. A season that ended with more losses than normal for his team and in turn, causing Spencer to blame himself and begin to self-sabotage.
Usually determined to make things move faster than expected and never let something hold him back, Spencer's attitude had come as a surprise to his long-term girlfriend when he refused to participate in any kind of rehab or physical therapy and instead would sit in his gaming room and sulk. The usually respectful and loving man she had been with was replaced by someone who was snappy and constantly on edge. The patience that she had tried to exhibit for his circumstances and the efforts to help him in his recovery eventually ran thin after month one and the following three turned into a cycle of bickering that eventually blew up one night when Olivia finally snapped. It was after a failed physical therapy session when
After going back and forth for two hours and exchanging words about the other not being understanding enough, they eventually retreated to separate rooms. It wasn't until Olivia had come into their room a few hours later that the words, "this has to stop" and a teary eyed "its really over" came out. It broke both of their hearts and neither one actually wanted it but with Spencer too caught up in self-pity and Olivia too hurt about the way he'd been handling things, it only solidified what no one saw coming: the end.
Months went on and not a word was spoken. The two had become experts in avoidance and strategically escaped any sort of setting that would possibly place them in the same environment. It left little hope for the family and friends who tried to hold out to hope that they'd break and come to their senses. When the two eventually started dating other people, Jordan and Simone decided to intervene and try to force them together.
Using the fact that they were expecting baby number two as bait, the two planned to use their baby shower as a way to get Spencer and Olivia to confront what they had been avoiding and trying to mask under the guise of "moving on".
Spencer was a little easier to persuade. After a thorough guilt trip from Jordan about having "bro time", the football player was making his way to Slauson Cafe and was prepared for a lecture about coming to the event. He had heard the good news directly from Jordan and Simone and was racking his brain on ways to best prepare himself for his attendance. He had avoided the million other invitations to Baker family functions out of respect for Liv. Well, mostly out of respect for Liv. The other part was out of guilt for his actions and part in the break-up. He was hurting and though the girl he was currently dating only came after he'd heard Olivia had been seeing someone, he was hesitant about bringing her but figured it'd be less awkward than showing up alone and seeing the woman he loved with another man. He'd just keep his space while they were there.
