"I'm in love with you."

"Us being together wouldn't be a mistake"

"So please, don't leave things like this"

The words kept replaying in her mind on a loop. The look in his eyes and the sincerity in his voice scaring her into a dream like state. So dreamlike that her brain told her to run because the gravity of it was too heavy. The other part was her heart was yelling at her to listen to those words. Those exact words that she had been waiting to hear since she first saw him walk into biology class that fall morning.

But in this moment, it didn't feel right. It couldn't be right. Other people were involved and she couldn't ignore that. No matter how much it broke her heart to walk away from what she had always wanted. What she knew she would always want. It was best if she kept to her sudden change of plans and walked away so that's exactly what she was going to do.

It wasn't until the buzzing of her phone snapped her out of her inner thoughts that Olivia fully reengaged with the business of the airport. Shaking her head and resuming her scan of the terminals, she ignored the call again. She had used up most of the emergency credit card funds she'd gotten from her parents in order to get this last minute ticket but it was necessary. Necessary but would become pointless if she couldn't find the damn terminal she needed.

A few moments later, the phone vibrated again and sure enough, the name didn't change. Torn again at the sight of his name coming up, that inner voice screamed at her to ignore it again but her heart whispered to just answer. Maybe they could talk this out and agree to pretend it never happened. Yes, that is exactly what they could do.

Her hand shaking, she hit the green accept button and took a breath.

"Hello?" she barely got out before tears welled up again. God damn it, this was going to suck even more than she thought.

"Liv, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to ambush you with all this but I just need to know you're okay" Spencer got out in one breath. It sounded like he was running a marathon but it must be because he was regretting what he said and was rushing to get it all out.

Squeezing her eyes shut, Olivia tried to summon up the strength to get the words out. It was hard enough to walk away the first time. "Uh um, I'm fine. I'm safe. I just have to get out of here. A lot happened and was said so I just think it's best. I'm sorry, Spencer." Holding back the tears that threatened to start again, she paused and waited for a response. It didn't come immediately and that made her even more nervous. "Spencer, are you there?"

The silence continued for a moment before he finally spoke up, still sounding out of breath but the noise in the background increasing in volume. "I can't pretend, Liv. I meant what I said. Every word." His voice sounded shaky, like he was in movement. "I'm sorry that it seemed so sudden but I promise you this, I will never be sorry for what I said."

"We were just caught up in the moment, Spencer. You have Layla and I can't do that to her. Not again."

"I care about Layla. But I love you. I love you, Olivia and if that means that I have to wait until you're ready, then I will. We can settle things at home first but I aint giving up on you. I told you that you always got me and I meant that." His voice firm and for some reason, still shaky.

Pulling the phone from her ear and putting her head back to look up, she tried to keep the tears from falling. Why did this have to be so hard? What cosmic debt did she owe that she had to keep breaking her own heart?

Screw it. If she was going to go down, she was going to at least go down honestly.

Taking a beat, Olivia brought the phone back to her ear. "I can't tell you how long I've waited to hear that from you. I knew from the first time I saw you that you would change my life. But we can't happen. Not this way. I can't lie and say that I don't love you too but it's too complicated and sometimes we don't always get what we want." She bit the inside of her lip to suppress the nerves and sniffles that she refused to let him hear. She had to be firm in order for this to be appropriately pushed down and erased.
