"Okay Meredith, you are done for today" They heard Tom's voice through the speaker
"Yay" Meredith muttered
"Do you think you can get up?" Derek softly asked
"I should be okay" She sighed and let Derek help sit up. She swayed a little and needed some time to steady herself. Derek lifted her off the table and let her stand on her feet
"Okay?" He checked
"Okay" She nodded and they walked out. She was too tired to pay much attention to the people that were staring at them
They continued their walk when Derek's phone started ringing. They walked over to a bench so Meredith could sit down for a minute while Derek picked up the phone
"Yes. I'm on my way" Derek said and ended the call
"What was that?" Meredith asked as her eyes were still closed
"Emma's teacher just called. Apparently she has been yelling all morning, refuses to do anything and she even hit Ava" Derek sighed and saw his family falling apart in front of him "Is it okay if I drop you off at mom's?"
"What?" Meredith opened her eyes "I'm coming with you" She stated
"Mer, you just underwent radiation. You should rest, I can drop you off at mom's-" He grabbed her hand
"Derek, these are my kids too and they have never done something like this so it's probably because of everything that's going on"
"Mer, I really don't think this is a good idea" Derek sighed
"I don't care" She sternly said and pushed herself on her feet "Are you coming or not?"
"Of course" He sighed and wrapped his arm around her waist to steady her. They made their way to the car and got in
Meredith quickly grabbed the blanket and pulled it over her as Derek started driving to the girls' school
Derek hated waking her, especially when resting would be best for her but he knew she would linch him if he would let her sleep
"Mer" He softly brushed his fingers over her cheek "Meredith, wake up"
"Hmm" She groaned "Gimme a min" She whispered as she composed herself. She yawned once more before they walked inside the school
"Mr and Ms Shepherd, hi" The principal was waiting for them "Follow me, please"
Meredith weakly made her way over to the principal's office. Derek's hand tightly around her hand
"I'm sorry for what Emma did, we're aware that our girls have been acting a bit different-" Derek started but the principal interrupted them
"Mr Shepherd, your daughter hit her older sister inside these walls. We don't care what they do at your house but here it won't be tolerated" He said sternly
"Our girls usually never hit each other!" Meredith replied, her voice pretty strong
"Ms Shepherd, as I said, it can't be tolerated inside these walls. We'll have to make that clear to them" The principal repeated
"What did you have in mind?" Derek asked as he noticed Meredith's body started to droop slowly
"You take them home now and Emma's teacher will decide what happens later on, okay?"
"Okay" Derek said
"You know where to find their classrooms?" The principal asked
"We know" Derek nodded and helped Meredith up. Emma's classroom wasn't that far but Meredith started gagging as they almost reached the classroom. He quickly helped her inside on of the toilets in the hallway when Emma's teacher walked in
"Oh, I'm sorry. I thought I heard something" Sophie said
"I'm sorry, my wife, she-" Derek didn't know if Meredith wanted people to know so he just kept quiet
"Emma told me something, it's okay. Anything I can do?" Sophie asked
"We're coming to get Em, could you maybe help her grab her stuff?" Derek asked
"Of course. We'll wait in the classroom" Sophie nodded and left the room again
"It's okay" Derek rubbed Meredith's back softly "Feeling a bit better?"
"I'm okay" She nodded and stood up "God, I hate that man"
"You protected our girls very good" Derek chuckled slightly which caused her to smile as well and for once it wasn't all about the cancer that was spreading inside her body, it was about her family
...
They were finally home. Derek had helped Meredith onto the couch and went to the playroom with the girls
"Girls, can you take a seat? I wanna have a talk with you" Derek said and sat down on one of the pillows on the ground
"Sorry daddy" Emma whispered "Sorry Ava"
"It's okay Em" Derek grabbed both their hands "Why did you do that?"
"I don't know" Emma looked at the ground
"You know that if something's wrong you can always talk to me or mommy, right?" Derek looked into their eyes and they both nodded. It was silent for a bit until Ava spoke up
"Daddy, mommy scared us this morning" She admitted
"Oh monkeys. Mommy didn't mean to" Derek teared up
"We know" Ava sighed
"But it was scary, heh? Just know that me or aunt Amy or Nana and Poppa are always around to help her so you don't have to be scared, okay?"
"Okay" The girls nodded
"Do you wanna play a bit?" Derek asked
"Do you wanna play with us?" Ava asked
"Of course. Barbies?" Derek chuckled
"We can have a tea party!" Ava smiled
"Can mommy join us?" Emma asked
"Maybe later" Derek rubbed his hand over her head
"Okay" The little girl sighed
"Ava, can you go grab the cookies? Me and Emma will go grab the cups" Derek said and stood up
"Going!" Ava giggled and ran to the kitchen. As she returned, she passed her mom. She opened the bin and grabbed a cookie. She placed it on the table next to Meredith and ran back to the playroom where she placed a few cookies on the plate Derek and Emma had set on the table
"Daddy, you have to wear the tiara!" Emma giggled
"Oh I do?" Derek chuckled
"Yes!" Both girls yelled
