Rantaro stood back from the pole and smiled, his fists on his hips in pride. He'd strung lights around their backyard, mainly around the firepit. The firepit they set up sat in the middle of the backyard, flowers and bushes surrounding the fence with a large tree looming over them in the corner. He had something planned, something he'd been thinking of for months now. It was the perfect weather, the dim skies allowing the lights to work their magic around the garden.
Reaching into the pockets of his jacket, Rantaro wrapped his fingers around the small, velvet boxes. He took a deep breath, heart pounding in fear as he imagined every possible route the evening could take. "Hey, Mami! You dead out there?!" Kokichi shouted from the home as he slid open the glass door. "Huh?" Frowning, the male glanced around the backyard, taking in the new scenery. "It's beautiful!"
"I'm glad you like it. Can you grab Shuichi and come out here?" Rantaro asked the purplette. Kokichi nodded and ran back into the house, disappearing from the greenette's view. Sighing, Rantaro slipped his hands out of his pockets and approached the flickering fire, staring at the bag of marshmallows next to one of the many deep brown bench seats.
Grabbing three sticks, Rantaro propped them up against three seats, including a hanging black wicker chair that Kokichi loved. It's not as romantic as a candle-lit dinner, but I did that not too long ago. This needs to be special, and we rarely use this firepit. The male paced around the firepit, following the stone tiles as he chewed the nail of his thumb whilst his hands trembled. Stop freaking out, everything will go well.
Hearing the sliding door open again, Rantaro looked up to see Shuichi and Kokichi approaching him. It's time. "Hey, sit down," he smiled, motioning to the chairs where he'd propped the sticks. Shuichi and Kokichi followed orders, catching a marshmallow Rantaro threw at them and sticking them into the amber flames. I need to start up a conversation, maybe then I'll feel less nervous... "How's work going at the moment?"
Shuichi and Kokichi shared a confused glance. You idiot, we live together, of course I know how work's going! "Well, I have another confusing case. Our only suspect doesn't seem to be the culprit, but I can't convince anyone else that they're innocent," Shuichi sighed, chewing on the soft white treat.
"I'm playing a gig for the prime minister! That's a lie though, it's just another bar," Kokichi chuckled, shoving the marshmallow into his mouth and snatching three more. God, he can strictly eat candy and still lose weight. Rantaro watched the firepit, nibbling on the corner of his charred marshmallow as he watched the fragmented flames whisk into the air and disappear.
"What about you Rantaro? You've been a bit silent about work lately," Shuichi motioned for him to speak.
"Oh, that's because I've just been cleaning the area. Pulling trash out of rivers and stuff," Rantaro sighed.
"Stop talking about boring things!" Kokichi whined. "Tell us why you've set this up!" His violet eyes sparkled with curiosity, like a child learning something new.
Rantaro rolled his eyes with a grin. "It's a surprise..." Maybe I can play it off like nothing? No, don't give up Rantaro. "I have something to say," he hurried to speak. Once he spat that out, Rantaro knew that neither of the men would let him leave without explaining what he had to say. Now that he'd decided to talk to the other two, Rantaro didn't want the night to end before he could reveal his surprise.
"Well? Spit it out then!" Kokichi groaned, throwing more marshmallows into his mouth.
"Kokichi, let him gather his thoughts," Shuichi frowned. "Take your time Rantaro."
"I don't need any more time," Rantaro smiled. He reached his hands into his pockets again, standing from his chair. "Let me speak for a while, okay?" Receiving a nod, Rantaro took a deep breath and stood in front of the males, the fire illuminating his silhouette.
"I love you all so much, more than anything. We've been together for so long now, and I can't think of spending my life with anyone else. During every big event in my life, you've both been there, and I'll always be there for you both. No matter what happens in life, I want to remain by your sides."
Rantaro took his hands out of his pockets, revealing the deep red boxes as he knelt on the light grey stones that surrounded the firepit. Shuichi gasped and clasped his hands over his mouth, dropping the stick holding a sticky marshmallow. "I know we all agreed we're not quite ready for marriage, I'd like to make a promise. Kokichi, Shuichi, I promise that I'll always be here for you, and I promise that, whenever we're ready, I want to marry you two in the future."
Opening the boxes, Rantaro revealed a ring in each. The accessories were silver, both with the trio's surnames etched into them. You couldn't see the names unless you looked close, but Rantaro thought that made it more special. "Do you both want to make this promise with me?"
Tears streaked down Shuichi's cheeks and hands, his skin glistening in the glow of the flames. Kokichi's eyes mimicked his tears, although the latter continued to wipe away the tears and pretend to be composed. Their eyes sparkled in amazement and joy, encouraging hope to course through Rantaro's veins. The crackling of fire behind them filled their ears, the world coming to a standstill as Rantaro awaited an answer.
"Of course, why wouldn't I?! I'd love to!" Shuichi cried out through sniffles, the male breaking into a fit of euphoric tears.
"Well, I guess we could get married eventually. If we have to," Kokichi rolled his eyes with a smirk, wiping away another tear. "I love you two," he muttered.
Rantaro felt tears of his own slide down his cheeks as he gingerly pulled the rings from the red velvet containers. Reaching out, he slid each ring of silver metal onto Shuichi and Kokichi's fingers, smiling as the promise cemented.
