You sat on the table top stunned at what you just heard, yet you were also unsure how to answer. Your eyes darted to your feet the minute his eyes met yours.
"I'm sorry but I am genuinely confused." You spoke with your eyes still connected to your feet.
"As am I , Cadet." He responded as he scratched the back of his head.
"I think I should be heading to bed, thank you for chatting with me. I will see to you in the morning. Goodnight" you suddenly spoke and stood up off the table booking it down the hall not giving the commander time to reply or to stop you.
The rest of the night, you got little to no sleep as his words were still echoing in your blank thoughts. Before you knew it the sun has risen and Sasha had woken to do her daily morning munching. It seemed like she already knew you were awake because her obnoxious chewing was 10x more louder than it normally was.
"So did the walk last night work?" She suddenly spoke breaking the silence.
"Uh yeah kind of" you responded, urging yourself to sit up and lean back against your pillow.
"It must've because after you left, I didn't wake up once to any of your noises" she spoke with a mouth full.
"Yeah." You said quietly. The door swung open and Connie walked in, per usual.
"You two should've been out in the stables less than 20 minutes ago. We're gonna be behind if you don't hurry up!" Connie grumbled, walking into the room, grabbing your arm to drag you out of bed.
"Well baldy I can't get changed when you are in the room" you scoffed, nudging him to exit. "We will be out in less than 5"
"You better, commander Erwin and captain Levi have been asking about where you and Sasha were" you froze in your tracks and turned your head giving Connie a weird look.
"Why are you looking at him like that?" Sasha caught on and lowered her brows. You broke your gaze and turned your attention back to getting your clothes together.
"Nothing, I don't know, I guess I'm just feeling off since last night. We'll be out soon" you spoke quietly. You saw Sasha give Connie a look before he exited your room closing the door behind him.
"Are you okay?" Sasha asked as she wiped her mouth and stood up from her bed
"Yeah sash, I'm fine. Just overwhelmed" you responded again trying to brush off the conversation. "Let's go before we get our asses handed to us" you mumbled as you exited the room leaving Sasha by herself. Sasha caught up to you, and you both made it the stables attending to your horses, gearing them up.
"What's the point of this expedition anyways?" Reiner spoke from his horses stall next to yours.
"First hand titan experience? Not sure" you spoke acknowledging his question, pulling your horse out of the stall and out of the barn. You entered the yard where the rest of the scouts were on horseback. Your eyes wandered the people until they landed on the group of three closest to the gate. Captain Levi, section commander Hange and Commander Erwin.
Your eyes broke the minute you caught sight of the commander, focusing yourself getting in the saddle when Reiner and Bertholdt pulled up next to you.
"You seem off" Reiner spoke as he turned his head to glance at you. Your eyes fell onto the withers of your horse avoiding confrontation of you off mood.
"I'm all good Reiner, just nervous with this whole expedition." You assured him.
"We've got your back" Bertholdt spoke "if your worried about not making it back"
"No that's not it at all, I mean. Yeah I worry about it going haywire. But that's not the whole reason. But thank you guys. I appreciate it." You smiled lightly.
"Attention scouts!" That familiar deep voice raised to gather the attention of them. "Today is the day we will begin the 57th Exterior scouting mission. Get with your assigned groups and revise your plans as we scout out." He finished, steadying his antsy horse. His eyes scanned the crowd, looking for you. In which less than a second, his bright ocean eyes locked onto yours. He sent you a small smile before turning his full distracted attention towards the scouts.
"We move out in 5!" He called out to the scouts once more before he ushered his horse towards where you were.
"Good morning cadet LN" he spoke calmly, halting his horse feet from you. Reiner and Bertholdt looked at each other before toning out the upcoming conversation between you and the commander.
"We're going to go join the group, YN. See you when you're done here?" Reiner asked, sending a questionable glance in your direction.
"I have changed plans for her" Commander spoke more towards you but keeping his volume well versed so those around could hear as well. "I have her in the frontal region"
"Stay safe out there YN. I'll be near. If you're in trouble, send a holler. I'll come to your aid." Reiner spoke, nodding before following Bertholdt towards their group. The group you were originally supposed to be in.
"I'm not in the north squad anymore?" You asked lowering your brows while the confusion filled your head.
"I'd like to keep you near my sights" he confessed. "This is a dangerous mission and I'm not entirely sure if you're ready?"
"I am as ready as I can be, sir" you smiled lightly and nodded.
"LN, I'd like to talk about what I had said last night, it was out of l-" he began but you quickly cut him off.
"Sir, it's no worries. It's in the past" you nodded concluding the conversation, having no desire to pursue it further.
"Glad we have that cleared up then." he spoke, looking away and clearing his throat before letting his eyes wander back onto you. "Let's go ahead and get with my squad, then we'll head out"
"Yes sir" you spoke, flicking your wrist with your reins in hand urging your horse to begin walking and following the commanders horse. Once the scouts had gathered with their squads, they were to line up in formation before the garrison lifted the gate.
"SOLDIERS MOVE OUT!" Erwin gave his final call, watching the gate lift slowly and each section made its way through the entrance. This was the start of the 57th exterior scouting mission and you were absolutely scared shitless.
