And, after all, what is a lie? 'Tis but the truth in masquerade. That was lord byron in case you are wondering.
For Paul only two type of people existed in this world. The one who manipulate and the one who get manipulated. Both are a taint on the human race. Paul's mask of lie and deception was perfectly placed on his face. No one could see what was behind it.
Even he wondered why he came down to this. He would say money but money can't make you do everything in the end. It is everything yet nothing but a piece of rectangular paper which is made up of paper and linen. A piece of paper that can shake the whole world.
What would have Reggie thought of him? What would have his nameless parents thought of him? Haah does it even matter. They were scum to no end. Not his mother though.
Did it even mattered now. People always wear masks. He wore it, Ash wore it, Cynthia wore it. Every single person he knew does. All that matters in the end is that his mask was stuck on his skin. He couldn't peel the lies off his face.
Ash hid his desperation behind his mask.
Diantha hide her struggle behind her mask.
Clair hide her past behind that mask.
Cynthia hide her regretful choices in past with those masks. So was it wrong for him to wear a mask?
"I blame all of it on you Reggie." He cursed out. Seeing Reggie forget everything was painful. Even for someone as heartless as Paul. Diseases are a pain in rear. But no matter how much he wanted, he couldn't bring himself to cry for his brother who was forgetting everything. He just looked at him forgetting everything.
It wasn't his fault either. All that he remembered from his childhood was a raised fist and his mother's desperate cry to his father to stop. It messed him up. Over and over.
It hurted him over and over. How he used to slam the pillow over his ears not wanting to hear the sound of plates breaking every night. How much he hated that person. With every single cell of his body.
And he sworn one thing. He sworn to become the strongest.
But path made Reggie and Paul walk different ways. Reggie chose to walk away from the path their father walked on while Paul walked on same path of his father but a little different. He was abusive toward pokemons. But didn't pushed them to an brink where they would kill themselves like his mother.
He remembered the day. The day he walked into that room only to found everything soaked in blood.
And that was changing path of their life. Reggie chose it to become a person he always wanted to be. No matter how much hard the battles were, he never gave up. This inspired him. He followed his footsteps right to the end defeating brandon carrying the legacy.
Brandon reminded Reggie of his old man for some reason and if he couldn't defeat his old man then he would defeat Brandon in his place. Seeing Reggie lose to him made his longing for power rise even more.
But there are a few things that stay with you throughout your life which were drilled into you as a kid.... And for Paul it was his snarky attitude and abusive behaviour towards his pokemons. He walked a different path from his old man but their interests collided a lot.... And he could do nothing to change it.
"YOU LIAR." Max yelled at him as Paul's eyes twitched. It wasn't his fault they were fooled twice because of their own stupidity. Was it? Lies and deception was what he had done upto this point. But it felt weird.
"Hack and slash Kabutops." The sword on its hands glowed pitch white swinging in the air as the leaf blade hitted against the sword protecting itself from the slash. The other hand was bought down like a judgement chopping off a tip of the tail of the Sceptile as Max cursed.
