CHAPTER 64

Cradle of Life...

Alec Somers waited for the room to clear. Matthew Brush leaned back in his chair and waited for the younger man to speak.

"The Protector has left Cub Creek and is going to be in attendance at the vampire ball." Alec said.

Brush nodded. "Good. The Prime Purity will target her first. If we can sway her to our side then she'll be a powerful ally. If not, we kill her and they'll be few who can stand against us. The Hunters that are in Cub Creek, order them to bring the Protector's children to us."

"It might be hard to convince them to follow orders. They are led by an older Hunter who is not loyal to us."

"Then have him killed and send someone else."

"Killing him would be suspicious. Phillip Jarman is well known. But if we were to ask him to bring the oldest child Aurora to meet at another location then we can say that we would like to test her to see if she would possibly be the next Protector. We tell him that she is indeed the next Protector because we have a new scientific blood test that will help us determine the likelihood that she'll be like her mother. We'll then have our other agents take her onto our plane and bring her here."

"Excellent plan!" Brush praised. "Go and fetch the girl. We might need a plan B."

LaRosse...

After finding out about the betrayal by one of the house maids, everyone was careful to meet in either Gericho or Gideon's office to avoid having their conversations overheard. Alphonse did regular scans to make sure there were no bugs being planted. Despite the extra measures everyone felt on edge and unsettled.

Tracy and Jonathan lay on their bed relaxing for a short while before they had to get dressed for a formal dinner because a couple of people who were a longtime friend of the Bloods would be joining them. It would be unusual if Gideon's parents cancelled plans that were set over 2 decades ago. The last thing they wanted was extra suspicions and it would give them a chance to observe their "friends." The ball was the next night and Tracy was a ball of anxiety.

"Something bad is going to happen." Tracy said as the cavernous pit in her stomach grew. "I'm worried. It feels like pieces are missing and I don't even know what to expect."

Jonathan sighed pressing a kiss to her forehead. "We've done our best to plan and-"

A ring from a cell phone interrupts. Tracy rolls over to reach her phone that's on the side table charging. "It's grandpa." She says putting the phone on speaker. "Hey grandpa."

"Tracy, are you busy?"

"No. Jonathan and I are in our room just trying to relax before dinner. How are you? Is everything alright?"

"Well, that's the thing. Earlier, Phil received a call from the Vise Leader of the Hunter's Council. It was a strange call because the Council is asking for Aurora to be brought to them immediately to determine if she is to be the next Protector."

Jonathan growled at the mention of the corrupt council's interest in their pup.

"I thought those tests were performed when girls reach the age of thirteen or fourteen." Tracy said suspiciously.

"Exactly. Which is why Phil immediately questioned the order. He was told that they've applied modern genetic testing to help determine the likelihood that she'll have your powers." The skepticism was plain in Roger's voice. "You know I don't trust the so-called sciences especially when money and politics is involved but this sounds like a load of bull crap that's just over the top. Phil was more or less threatened to carry out orders or face trial. Alec Somers gave Phil forty-eight hours to follow through. We aren't budging and if the Council is indeed corrupt then they'll send another team out instead of trying to negotiate."
