CHAPTER 66 (MATURE CONTENT)

LaRosse...

Dona sat alone sipping tea at the small table in the corner of the quiet kitchen after everyone had gone to bed. The dinner party that Gideon's parents had hosted was superficial. Trust was a commodity that no one could afford to place in their guests. Friendships would be strained because no one knew who to trust. One thing was for sure. Until the members of the Prime Purity were exposed, everyone was a suspect even those that the Bloods had called friends for centuries.

Foot steps were heard leading to the kitchen. A moment later, Haggai stepped in. Dona didn't say anything because at the moment she had nothing to say. Dellucy had spoken of their past and shared their previous life together. Day by day Dona felt the tiredness of the once great witch. Dellucy needed to reconnect to her Soulmate through Dona and then their spirits would merge allowing Dellucy to rest. Unfortunately, Haggai was being less than accommodating and his lack of interest was discouraging to Dona.

The silence stretched and Haggai shifted uncomfortably.

"You're not going to say anything?"

Dona raised a brow. "Is there anything to say?"

Frustrated, Haggai ripped open the fridge, pulling out ingredients to make a sandwich. Dona said nothing just continued to sip her tea watching the man struggle to find the bread in all the cupboards leaving the all doors open along the way. Slapping the counter angrily he growled, "Where's the damn bread?!"

Casually taking another sip, Dona suggested, "Try the wooden box on the counter with the word 'Bread' engraved on it."

Haggai huffed feeling embarrassed for not noticing the bread box earlier. Selecting the rye, he placed two in the toaster next to the bread.

"Would you like a sandwich?" he asked.

Dona half shrugged, "Sure."

She stood and made her way to the center island where Haggai had placed pastrami, turkey, ham, mayo, Dijon mustard, cheese, tomato, and lettuce. Pulling out the cutting board and a chef's knife, she set to work slicing the tomato and lettuce. The toaster popped and Haggai placed two slices of bread on two plates. He brought them to where Dona was working and began slathering the bread with mayo and mustard.

Dona went to the fridge and pulled out a small jar of pesto. "Could you put a little on mine?"

Haggai took the jar and put some of the green paste on both sandwiches before adding layers of the other ingredients. "I never thought to doing that with the pesto."

Dona shrugged. "It smelled like it would be good."

"Well, you were right."

"I generally am." She said taking the last bite of her sandwich and moved efficiently to clean up the mess.

"What should I do then?" Haggai asked as he finished putting away the dishes and took a seat at the table again.

Dona paused a moment before joining his and asking, "What do you mean?"

Haggai sighed running a hand over his twisted locks. "I'm afraid that this time I'll lose my Vixen for good."

Dona looked into his eyes. "Everyday Dellucy becomes weaker and weaker. One day she'll fade altogether. She won't have the strength to break the curse she placed on your kind."

The thought was sobering. Everything they sacrificed would have been for nothing. He would lose her either way but at least they would have accomplished something great. It made him feel almost desperate to complete the bond until he remembered.
