Marshall POV
"Is Val even home?" Laney asked me as she and Hailie followed me upstairs so I could show them the gift I got for Val.
"Nah, she ran out to the store. She should be back soon."
I brought them in our bedroom and closed the door in case she came home.
"These are it." I took the earrings I bought for Valentina out of the back of a drawer in my dresser. I knew Val didn't go through my shit. Being with a woman I actually trust in my home is crazy.
"Oh Dad, they're amazing!" Hailie took them from me to hold them up to the sunlight by the window. "She's going to love the blue."
"I know. I figured she likes the ocean, and the blue represents the sea..." I rambled as I absentmindedly shed my beater to pick out a shirt to wear to the barbeque that day.
"Oh my god, Uncle! What happened to your back?"
"What do ya mean?" I stood backward in the mirror with my neck turned around trying to examine myself when I embarrassingly realized what Alaina was referring to.
"Sweet little Valentina does that when you guys are alone?!" Hailie shrieked when she saw the fresh scratches all over my back.
Both my daughters tried to hold in giggles, and I just smirked as I shrugged it off hoping my face didn't turn too red.
"Ssshh...Don't make a big deal about it. Val's real quiet about stuff like that." I put a shirt on to try to get the attention off me.
"It doesn't look like that was too quiet." Laney giggled.
"Jesus Christ, would you change the subject please!"
"Good for Val though." Laney exchanged looks with Hailie and laughed again. "No, seriously Uncle, the earrings you got for her are beautiful. Val's going to love them. She's so sweet, she's perfect for you. It's nice to see you this happy."
It was a relief that Valentina got along so well with my daughters. And I think people are starting to see that Val makes me a better man.

Even though I had a bunch of shit catered for the party, Val insisted on making a dessert and a broccoli salad. She told me she wanted to contribute something. That's my Valentina.
The girls had gone out to the pool while I finished getting ready for tonight. Some of my boys who haven't met Val are coming and of course my family. It was gonna be a good time.
I came downstairs and Val was standing at the island arranging the food. It reminded me of that time I went over to Kim's house to surprise her. She was standing just like that.
Valentina's eyes sparkled when she smiled at me from across the room. I was drawn to her. Her lips were red, and her eyes were smoky. She wore a simple sundress showing just a bit of cleavage. Her dark, long, curls framed her figure perfectly. She looked like a goddess. And she definitely still made my dick twitch.
"Hi Marshall."
I briskly hurried over to her to grab her face and kiss her, "I missed the fuck out of you!"
We both started laughing because she knew exactly what I meant. We have so many inside things that are just between us.
"You remember that?"
She wiped tears from her face from laughing, "Of course, I remember that. I'm a woman. We remember everything."
"Here, I got you something." I handed her the box.
"Marshall, you didn't have to get me anything."
"Just open it sweetheart."
My heart swelled at Val's reaction. She couldn't stop kissing me and thanking me and went to put them on straight away. It was refreshing to see her so happy.
Val POV
I loved the laughing. I had laughed more in the past two months than I had in my entire life. I'd never had someone to share inside jokes with. And even with knowing each other for only a short time, Marshall and I had already made so many happy memories together.
The earrings he gave me that day were beautiful, and I put them on straight away to show them off at our barbeque.
Guests started arriving at the party and I wasn't nearly as nervous as I thought I would be. They all seemed like nice people. Some of them I had met before at the studio. I stayed with Marshall as he introduced me to people for a lot of the night, while my little girls swam in the pool with Royce's daughters. Everyone was eating the delicious food, swimming, and having a good time.
I don't know where Marshall got to, but I was in the pool having a nice conversation with Paul's wife when I noticed Kim walk around the corner of the house. I didn't know what she wanted, but it made me nervous that she was here. I quickly got out of the pool and wrapped a towel around myself to run over and grab her arm to lead her back out to the front of the house where we could be alone.
"Kim, what are you doing here? Do you need one of the girls? I can get them for you."
"No, I was just bored, and I know my daughters are here at Marshall's party, thought I might come on over and see what's going on." She slurred.
I could smell alcohol on her breath, and she was so close to being off probation.
"Kim, you need to go home. I'll have one of the girls drive you."
"Oh, so I'm not welcome here anymore? I'm the fucking enemy?"
"C'mon Kim, I never said anything like that."
"I never thought when I took you under my wing, you'd fuck my ex-husband. I should have known you'd do me wrong." She continued to have drunken blather.
"Kim, I'm sorry. I had no way of knowing what was going to happen between me and Marshall." I spoke softly to try and keep her calm.
Kim stared at me intensely, "they say you don't come to counseling anymore. I haven't even seen you in almost a month."
"Yeah. They said that it was appropriate for me to start coming monthly now instead of weekly. My moods have calmed down, I'm sleeping better. I don't have near as many panic attacks as I used to. I just need to keep working through the craziness."
"Really? And you plan on doing that with him?" She put her hands on her hips.
Kim's voice was now starting to sound like she was in a trance and like she might cry at the same time, "How did you get better so quickly Val? How did you figure everything out and get a man to love you?"
"It's not about having a man, Kim. You can search for happiness in someone else, but it must start from within yourself."
