Val POV
"How was Florida?" Hailie hugged me in the lot of my apartment complex.
"It was amazing." I dreamily recalled all the special little moments we shared on our trip.
"Where are the girls?" She peered in the back of my car. "Are they with my dad?"
I nodded, "Yes, they were still sleeping when I got up and I didn't want to wake them. Do you want to come upstairs with me?" Hailie followed me up to my small apartment.
"I like your place Val. It's cozy." She walked around my living room and over to the kitchen.
"It's not even my place anymore. I'm just here to grab some things and take a look around. We're moving out of here."
"Are you guys moving in with my dad?!" Hailie shrieked in excitement.
I nodded my head unsure if it was ok to tell her. Marshall may want to tell her this himself.
"It's ok Val, he talks about you to me and my sisters all the time. All good of course."
"He does?" I gave a shy smile, "What does he say?"
"He told us that he loves you and your daughters."
I couldn't help my eyes filling with tears, "He said that?"
"Yes." Hailie smiled and stepped closer, "My dad has been different since he's met you Val. I think you make him feel young again. I watch him playing with your little girls, he enjoys kids."
My tears turned to into a peaceful smile, "I know."
"The other night when I saw the two of you making dinner together," Hailie stopped and shook her head in a grin, "I've never seen my father act giddy like that with anyone. Even my mom."
"Really?"
"Yes Val. And now he asked you to move in. It seems like it's going perfectly. I'm happy for the two of you."
I smiled and reached out to hug her, "Thank you Hailie. Your dad is a really great guy. My kids and I are lucky to have him in our lives."
"How was your trip by the way?" She asked cheerily. "Did you have a good time?"
"We had a great time, but things did get a little...uncomfortable."
"With my dad?"
"No, your dad was wonderful. It was actually with my own parents."
"Were they at least happy to see the girls?"
I sighed quietly at Hailie's innocent inquiry, "No. They didn't even ask about them." I answered honestly and then there was an awkward silence. I could tell Hailie couldn't comprehend such a broken family. "It helped me to realize some things though."
I grabbed a bag from the closet and started packing some more of our clothes and shoes to take over to Marshall's. I snatched the pictures of my daughters and I that were on the mirror in my bedroom and some of the girls' bath toys. It was becoming clear to me that we didn't have many belongings to bring with. Besides, Marshall already had everything we could ever want or need at his place.
I carried the bags out to my car and Hailie followed.
"Come with me."
I led us down the walkway outside my apartment to a doorway on the side of the building. We made our way to the basement where there were small storage spaces for each tenant, and I used the key on my keyring to unlock my area.
"The last twelve years of my life fit into this closet."
Marshall POV
While Val ran back to her apartment for a while, I entertained her little ones. I told them they could have whatever bedrooms they wanted, so Cassaundra chose a different one down the hall from me and her mom. Bella stayed in the same one she has always stayed in when they sleep at my house. I guess she's comfortable in there. I fed them breakfast and we were playing outside when Val rolled up in the Subaru and Hailie pulled in right behind her.
