"𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐓𝐖𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐘-𝐄𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓
𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐭"It really did pain Aang to see Katara in that situation, to be deceived by the people closest to her as she suffered. There was no time to examine every staff team at the royal members' service or it would just delay their plans to counterattack the Fire Nation.
Katara lay in her bed, many thoughts running through her head. Who could've planned this? Who was so evil to come up with such a strategy to get rid of her? Whatever is happening to her body, did someone do this to her mother too?
Aang sat at the end of the bed. He wished to comfort her but Katara was clear that she didn't want any comfort but some time alone to think. He knows she didn't deserve to be in those conditions and seeing her like that, Aang couldn't help but remind himself how much of a failure he was as her Avatar.
"So..." Aang began to play with his fingers, trying to ignore the weird tension in the air. "I sent the message to Sokka and Hakoda and they said they'll do their best to investigate. But... It might take longer with the preparations to go back to battle the Fire Nation."
Katara hums. "I understand."
No, she didn't understand. She wanted to get out of bed and take down the very person that has contaminated her body all these months. But Hakoda was very clear she wasn't allowed out, who knows when is the next time she collapses and there's nobody to help her. Even so, she was going to take the matter into her hands.
Aang sighs in frustration. "I really wish we had found out about this sooner." His jaw tightens and Katara glances over her shoulder to look at him.
"No one saw this coming. We couldn't have predicted this." She whispers, loud enough for Aang to hear.
"But–" Aang had to pause himself so he could silently meditate on his self-control. "If... If you were to die while I could've done something to prevent it and save you... I– I don't think I could live with myself." His voice breaks, no matter how much he struggled to hide it.
Katara sat up at the sound of his voice breaking. Her face softens when she realises she wasn't the only one who was trying to put a brave face on during this difficult time.
She tosses the blanket off her body and crawled to Aang. She cups his face with her hands as she crawls onto his lap, straddling him. Aang inhales sharply while he looked up at her. "I care about you too much to let you suffer any longer, Princess."
"Hey..." Katara tilts her head as she stares into his silver eyes with her ocean ones. "Didn't I say we would've never seen this coming? Someone infiltrated into the castle and has been poisoning me for almost six months. Big deal." She gives him a weak smile while Aang slightly frowned at the fact Katara just pointed out.
