Since Hunter Slysdale is the human version of the grim Walker known as Hunter Wittebane from the owl house, and that poor child has a lot of trauma, and so does this version of Hunter. But we are not focused on the grim Walker today. We're focused on the human boy. Using multiple articles and my own knowledge, I wanted to make this sweet little prince as realistic as possible. Which means it's not all sunshine and rainbows. There will be heavy topics mentioned in here.
The summary of this essay is the following:
Hunter acts like a small child because he is emotionally stunted at that age, but he's still your normal teenager"When trauma impairs your ability to develop full emotional maturity, this is known as arrested psychological development. Trauma can "freeze" your emotional response at the age you experienced it" (source: psychcentral) Hunter Golding Slysdale often acts like a four to five year old because that's when his trauma with his father began.
But forest, you ask, wouldn't that be age regression?
No. Age regression is a type of therapy, as defined by Healthline.com
"Age regression occurs when someone reverts to a younger state of mind. This retreat may be only a few years younger than the person's physical age. It could also be much younger, into early childhood or even infancy."That is not what is happening with Hunter here. The key difference is not really the therapy. It's the words. Revert. Hunter is not reverting to any age, just parts of his brain are stuck at a different developmental time. TL;DR: Hunter doesn't regress at all
This is what trauma does. It can affect your mental age very significantly, and if the first part wasn't enough. Here's another piece of evidence. According to the website multiplyingconnections.org, Trauma can absolutely have negative effects on the brain.
"Conversely, trauma—abuse, neglect, exposure to violence, lack of attachment, and other adverse childhood experiences—affect the structure and chemistry of the brain and can stunt its natural growth and maturation. "Hunter has had all of these happen to him start from PRESCHOOL AGE. He was basically forced to be in his father's shady ass business since that age. He was barely fed, he was hit, his father would never let him get too close to him. he wasn't allowed to have toys or any sort of item he could get attached to easily. His father was heavily violent towards him every time the boy disobeyed him or disappointed him.
Philip, his grimey ass father would leave him for DAYS, saying he was going out to "work"
This is why Hunter has a strong, emotional, childlike attachment to his mother. He knows that she is his safe space. Even though he knows this, he still gets really emotional and clings to her whenever she walks in the door home from work.
If you would like to know why Hunter is so short for his age, trauma has been known to affect physical growth. But that's not all that is affecting it. Because he was malnourished for the majority of his childhood, that is the main factor. He is physically and emotionally stunted.
He's still your happy, friendly, local teen.
And he'll be damned if you rip him away from his mama bear.
He will get aggressive if she's hurt. That's his mama bear, and he's her cub.So don't try it.
Or do.
Some people don't care
But he will
