Riley took a deep breath before commencing his story

"Well to start with the slightly easier part, at the ball a man came up to me and said he was my long lost grandfather"

"Expound"
Nikolai stated as he was slightly confused.

"Well, ever since I can remember my parents have always told us that our grandparents on my dad's side were dead. My mom's family isn't really involved except a card on our birthdays. They never liked my dad for whatever reason and chose to keep their distance.

But I've seen them in family photos when my mom was young and the man I saw that night he wasn't my mom's dad"

"And you're sure that your father's parents are really dead?"

"Yes... Well no, I mean I don't know. Why would they lie about something like that?"
The younger groaned in frustration.

"There are several reasons, especially in a family like yours, maybe they had a disagreement, maybe your father cut off ties with his"

"But mom, she-she would never lie to me about something like this"
Riley's confidence fell and he was now trying to convince himself more than the man sitting across from him.

"Maybe she doesn't know"

"You're right"
Riley took a sip of his champagne, deep in thought.

"Then again darling, this could all be trick"

"I've considered that, but what does he stand to gain?"

"Money perhaps? If you want me to look into it I will"
Nikolai stated reaching over to grasp Riley's hand in his own.

"Ok, he left his card with me with a number and a name you can use that I guess. Do you know a Samuel Grace?"

"Never heard of him, I'll deal with it tonight though, by tomorrow we should have an answer. But what are your expectations, do you want this to be true or...?"

"I honestly don't know, I'm not one of those people who felt an emptiness where their grandparents should be. I accepted their deaths a long time ago because I never knew them you know? But I guess now that this man has shown up, if it turns out to be true then... I want to meet him, I want to know why he showed up now. I've been alive for 22 years and I've never gotten so much as a Christmas card. And why me? Why not Logan or Beth?"

"I understand and I'll support you no matter what you decide okay?"

"Thank you"
Riley smiled at his lover feeling like the luckiest guy in the world.

"Now, I feel like there's more"

And just like that his smile fell.

The worst part of the story was here.

"You're familiar with Rachel, Uncle James' wife correct?"

"Somewhat"
Nikolai responded.

He did in fact know of her, they exchanged greetings and maybe a few words whenever she was attached to James' side, but other than that he has no prominent memories of her.

"Well, umm at the wedding she uhh she warned me to stay away from you because apparently you 'belong to her'"

"What?"

"Yeah, well actually she threatened me and called me a crossdressing freak"
He frowned at the memory.

"Jesus Christ Riley, why didn't- have you been dealing with this by yourself this entire time?"

"I told Hailey about it, but we haven't didn't really discuss it much and we haven't talked about it since"

The older man took another sip of his champagne before rubbing his temple with his pointer and middle finger, feeling a headache coming on.
