The melancholy music echoed throughout the entire apartment as Nikolai skillfully played 'Broken' by Noelle Johnson.
Riley didn't know the song, but he felt every chord as though the keys were connected to his heart.
With teary eyes he gazed up at Nikolai whose eyes were closed and he looked as though he was so far away.
As the song came to a close silence reigned for a few minutes as both men wallowed in their own thoughts.
The serenity was broken as Riley released a small sob.
"Baby why are you crying?"
"I-I'm sorry, that was just so sad"
With furrowed brows Nikolai glanced down at his fingers which were hovering over the keys of the piano.
"I didn't mean to make you cry, I just selected a song randomly"
"It's okay, I'm just a little too sensitive"
"No, that was my fault"
He gently wiped the stray tears that had fallen from the little's eyes before pulling him in for a kiss.
It was short, but immediately warded away all the negative thoughts that had plagued Riley's mind.
As they pulled away the blonde couldn't help but smile shyly.
"Why don't I play something a little more upbeat?"
"Okay daddy"
At first Riley didn't recognize the tune, but soon he was singing along to 'The Bare Necessities' from the Jungle Book.
His voice wasn't the best, but to Nikolai's ears it was one of the most beautiful sound he had ever heard, second to Riley's laughter.
"Daddy that was so good"
He giggled clapping excitedly.
"It was, I didn't know you could sing baby"
"That's because I can't, I sounded terrible"
"Nonsense, I thought you were amazing"
Riley blushed furiously but smiled at his daddy's words.
"Can I hear one more?"
"Anything for you"
One turned into five and for the rest of the night they played disney songs until Riley was basically sleeping whilst being seated.
"Alright bub, let's get you to bed"
"B-but, I's not tired daddy"
"Riley I have to get up early in the morning for work the piano will still be here tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that"
After deliberating for a few seconds the little finally conceded raising his arms.
Nikolai lifted him unto his hip and carried the younger to their room.
Riley fell asleep before they even got there and the older couldn't help, but chuckle lightly.
After tucking him in Nikolai turned the lights off before crawling into bed next to his little one.
He pulled the younger close to himself, wrapping his arms around the small body securely soon he was dosing off as well.
