Problem:

Corporation A, with a current market value of P52 gave a dividend of P8 per share for its common stock. Corporation B, with a current market value of P95 gave a dividend of P12 per share. Use the stock yield ratio to measure how much dividends shareholders are getting in relation to the amount invested.

Corporation A

Given:
Dividend per share = P8
Market value = P52

Find: stock yield ratio

Solution:
Stock yield ratio = dividend per share ÷ market value

= P8 ÷ P52

= 0.1538 ≈ 15.38%

• Divide the dividend per share to the market value to get the stock yield ratio of corporation A.

Corporation B

Given:
Dividend per share = P12
Market value = P95

Find: stork yield ratio

Solution:
Stock yield ratio = dividend per share ÷ market value

= P12 ÷ 95

= 0.1263 ≈ 12.63%

• Divide the dividend per share to the market value to get the stock yield ratio of corporation B.

Corporation A has a higher stock yield ratio than Corporation B. Thus, each peso would earn you more if you invest in Corporation A than in Corporation B. If all other things are equal, then it is wiser to invest in Corporation A.

Given:
house & lot price = 3,800,000
down payment rate = 20% (0.20)

Find: mortgage amount

Solution:
Down payment = down payment rate × house & lot price

= 0.20 (3,800,000)

= 760,000

• multiply the down payment rate to the house & lot price to get the down payment amount.

Mortgage amount = house & lot price – down payment

= 3,800,000 – 760,000

= 3,040,000

• minus the house & lot price to the down payment amount to get the mortgage amount.
