"On Various Kinds of Thinking "

James Harvery Robinson

The academic text entitled "On Various Kinds of Thinking" written by James Harvey Robinson from his book entitled "The Mind in the Making" published on 1921. The author Mr. James Harvey Robinson defines the four various kinds of thinking and the most pleasant type of it is the "reverie" or free association of ideas. He also dissects observation and rationalization at length. The purpose is to let us talk about how various kinds of thinking works and whenever that happens. How philosophers just like him thinks differ from medical professionals or educators.

The academic text tackles why most of the time we can't determine what or how other people thinks and the idea of "we do not think enough about thinking". The first kind of various thinking is "reverie" also known as free association of ideas, it's our spontaneous and favorite kind of thinking. The second kind of various thinking is "practical decisions" which means that reverie is often interrupted by second kind of various thinking, its also more laborious and difficult than reverie and decisions are easily distinguishable from the free flow of the reverie. The third kind of various thinking is "justification or rationalizing" which has something to do with the way we think when someone questions our beliefs and opinions. The fourth kind of various thinking is "creative thinking" that has something to do with our way of thinking creatively or generating new ideas. To sum it up, those are various kinds of thinking, why the pursuit of knowledge should be encouraged, and how this pursuit is disrupted in our society.

We do not think enough about "thinking" which is true enough because we are not thinking about how those thoughts made. That we do not know what's going on in other people's head, which it very true, because we always think that there are some things that we must kept in ourselves because we thought that it's too personal and intimate to share. Most of us are always thinking many things during our waking hours or until we fall asleep, or maybe until sleeping. The main idea of the academic text is to elaborate the various kinds of thinking that we haven't notice since we think without thinking "thoughts" or as he said in the text, we do not think enough about thinking. According to Mr. Robinson 1921, the first kind of various thinking is "reverie" also known as free association of ideas, its our spontaneous and favorite kind of various thinking, these are our hopes and fears, desires, our fulfillment or frustrations, our likes and dislikes, our loves and hates, and resentment. Well, agree with that because most people thinking many things such as daydreaming or what next they should do. The second kind of various thinking is "practical decisions" which means that reverie is often interrupted by second kind of various thinking, its also more laborious and difficult than reverie and the decisions are easily distinguishable from the free flow of the reverie. The third kind of thinking is "justification or rationalizing" which has something to do with the way we think when someone questions our beliefs and opinions. Which is true because sometimes we argue with the people that doesn't have the same ideas with us. The fourth kind of various thinking is creative thinking that has something to do with our way of thinking creatively or generating new ideas. I guess we've been engage to all these various kinds of thinking, but we mostly engage in "reverie" because most of the time, we were lost in our own thoughts, and the ideas on our minds always come freely and it has been influencing our speculations very often. Moreover, Discussing different various kinds of thinking helps us recognize our own thoughts and made us observe our own reasons and understand other people's beliefs. I like that, the writer explained the various kinds of thinking in a detailed essay. He gaves some examples in every topic that easy to understand and the readers can easily relate to. He gave personal experiences, and examples how those various kinds of thinking works or happens. But as a reader, sometimes there are words and examples that are confusing and hard to understand especially when you are trying to determine something that was mentioned. But I guess the paragraph helps the reader to easily determine some important parts of the text. Although the academic text is kinda long, but I guess its not boring to read and the topic is interesting. Also, it worth reading because you can learn from it. It has the idea of how philosophers thinks different from medical practitioners and educators.

The academic text made me realize how our thoughts wander freely. How we lost in one's thoughts or sometimes why we overthinking things. He emphasized that these free association of ideas form the chief index of our character. That we make decisions by thinking deeply or to make decisions in new or unfamiliar situations. The text help us gather and process the relevant informations. How creative thinking made us using our abilities and soft skills to come up with new solutions to problems. This improve our thinking abilities. He also stated that these various kinds of thinking travel by thinking through the past, present and future to create new ideas in an individual's mind. These thoughts culminate to form a central index that creates the basic character of an individual. He also elaborates about how artists, philosophers, and many great thinkers have apply these basic free thoughts.
