Hero
"What do you mean?" I run a hand through my hair.
"She didn't answer me either..." Alex sighs on the phone.
We're driving to Los Angeles.
Without Jo's home address, I can't even hope to use the one hour I have left to spend here with her.
I can't just walk away.
I can't.
I look at Jamie in despair.
I don't know what to do.
"Okay, I'll find another way..." I sigh "Thank you Alex..."
"Can I know what's going on?" Jamie asks as soon as I close the call with my friend.
"Jo... she left me!"
"What?" She looks at me in shock.
Yes, I'm upset too. It seems like a nightmare, one of the worst I've ever had.
I feel like I'm being sucked into a tornado and I can't find a way out.
"I want to go to her and clarify. Now."
"...but you don't know where she lives!" conclude Jamie.
I shake my head and put my hands on my face.
Could it get any worse?
"We only have an hour, I don't think we can make it in time anyway..." She takes my hand trying to comfort me.
I take a deep breath and remain silent. There must be a way.
There's definitely a way to look at it now.
I'm trying in vain to call her.
Her phone goes straight to voice mail. Her voice tells me that she is not reachable at the moment.
Her voice.
What did I do to make her run away?
I still don't understand.
She never listened to gossip, why start now? It's not possible...
The voice mail beep awakens me from my thoughts and makes me realize that the recording of a message has begun.
Maybe it's not such a bad idea.
"Jo, listen. I don't know what happened, I just know we have to talk about it. I didn't do anything, those videos that are on the Internet are... I don't know, really... they're stupid! I didn't do anything, those girls were with us all night because Felix and Morgz had a crush on them... I don't understand... I just want to..."
The second beep warns me that the time to record the message is over.
Well, perfect!
I'll dial the number and get it to voice mail again.
She won't talk to me, but I hope she hears these messages eventually.
Beep.
"We have to talk about it, it can't end like this. I have to go back to London, I have no choice... I can't postpone... I'll be back in a few weeks, I don't know when, but I'll be back! I will... Filming for the movie is in Canada...but I'll..."
Beep.
Message finished.
Again.
Annoyed, I turn off the screen and throw the phone on the seat, looking back out the window.
Jamie's talking on her cell phone, trying to organize our movements for the next few days.
I sigh for the umpteenth time, trying to find a solution that for now seems simply impossible to find.
She'll never listen to voicemails.
I know. I'd do the same thing.
I have to find a way to let her know that I won't give up.
She may have given up, she ran away.
I didn't. I'm here for her!
I call Mia again and she goes to voice mail too.
Did they both turn off their phones? Perfect.
That's why she's not answering Alex.
Beep.
"Mia this is Hero. I absolutely have to talk to her... Nothing happened, I don't know why she got scared and ran away so! I'm going crazy! I have to leave for London in a few hours. I'm going crazy Mia!" I pass a hand in my hair closing my eyes.
I don't know what to say anymore.
I feel like I'm floundering in rough water.
The second beep warns me that the message recording is over.
Again.
