Max has been in the hospital for a little over two months now. Her bones have healed, so she isn't in casts anymore. Sadly, everyone was losing hope. Even Lucas was starting to believe she wouldn't wake up, but he kept hanging onto a little bit of hope. He knew his girl was strong. She could beat this.

For the past few weeks, El has been visiting more often. She would make everyone leave the room. No one knew this, but El has been trying to bring Max back. It was only last week that El finally saw her in the void. However, Max wasn't in the hospital bed. She was walking around confused and upset. The worst part is Max was able to see and talk to El. Max was stuck in the void and separated from her body.

"Well, if I'm technically still alive, there has to be some way I can get back into reality," Max reasoned with El. The darkness of the void was lonely, and Max couldn't take it anymore.

"I have an idea, but it might not work." El knew they had to figure something out quickly. It wouldn't be too long before they take Max off life support.

"I've got nothing to lose."

"I'm going to need Lucas." When El first talked to Max in the void, they made a deal to tell no one. Max didn't want to give her friends false hope, and El agreed.

"I thought we said no to involving any of them!"

"I know, but this might be our only chance. I don't have to tell him what's going on. He just has to be next to you in the hospital."

Max gave El a worrisome look and agreed to try out her idea. El quickly left the void and went to grab Lucas in the hospital hallway.

"No asking questions, okay." El sat him in the chair next to the hospital bed.

Lucas watched as El sat on the edge of the bed. He was confused as she closed her eyes and found Max in the void.

"Hold my hands," El told Max. They intertwined fingers. "I'm going to find Lucas, and hopefully, you'll stay with me." El concentrated and shifted her mind from Max to Lucas.

"Holy shit," Max whispered. She saw Lucas, El, and herself all at the hospital. "Okay, so now what?" The redhead was now eager. Hope that she would see her friends again was slowly filling her up.

"You see yourself now, so wake up," El commanded.

"I don't know-how," Max was confused.

"Yes, you do." With that, El poofed and went back into reality. "You know how to wake up Max," She said again but to Max's body.

Max just stood there. She could see that Lucas was perplexed. El wouldn't let him speak, so he just sat there with his eyebrows scrunched in confusion. Lucas grabbed her hand and for the first time in the void, she could feel it. She did know how to wake up.

The redhead closed her eyes and went through every good memory she could remember. Flashes of the snowball, California, her dad, El, Lucas, and the party flooded her mind. Suddenly, it went black. Shit, she couldn't think of any more memories. Max was frustrated with herself, so she opened her eyes.

It wasn't dark anymore. It was painfully bright.

"MAX?"

That's Lucas's voice. She knew and loved that voice all too well.

"You did it, Max!' El cheered.

Max was still frozen in shock as a single tear ran down her cheek. El gave her a tight squeeze before she left Lucas and Max alone to get a doctor.

"Don't cry," Max spoke to Lucas on the verge of tears.

"I thought I lost you...again," He wept out.

"I'm still here, Stalker. I don't know how, but I am." She wiped his tears away with her thumb.

"Your bones are healed, and you can see. How can you see?"

"El got my heart to start beating again. I'm pretty sure she did something with my vision." Max was so thankful she got to see everyone's faces again.

"She didn't tell us that," Lucas wondered why El didn't tell him.

"She felt guilty, and when we met in the void, we didn't want to give anyone false hope," Max said sympathetically.

"I hope you know I never gave up. I always had a little bit of hope you would wake up again."

"I listened to all of them."

"What?"

"I might not have gone to any of your games, but I listened to all of them on the radio. I know you made that last shot, and I am so proud of you. If I was there, I know for a fact it would've been a happy memory." Lucas immediately wrapped her in his arms. "You are all of my happy memories, Lucas." She whispered and held him tightly.

"Do you still want to go to the movies? It could be another happy memory." Lucas didn't know why he was nervous. She said yes before.

"I wouldn't miss it for the world." Max smiled at him.

"There's only one problem..." Her eyebrows raised in curiosity. "The town is destroyed, and the upside-down is slowly infiltrating Hawkins." Lucas deadpanned.

"You've got to be kidding me."

"It's Hawkins. We never get a break, but I might know a place we can go," A grin spread across the boy's face.

"I'll follow you anywhere." Max smiled just before the doctors came into the room.
