They're 17 and this is present-day so they have phones.

Sunday

Max could hear her parents begin to fight once again. By now she was over it and wanted it to stop so she said something.
"Will you guys just SHUT UP!" Max yelled at them.
"Maxine stay out of this," Her father said.
"No just get a divorce already if you keep getting in arguments!" She sassed back.
"Do not raise your voice at us young lady," Susan yelled back.
"DO YOU NOT REALIZE HOW DAMAGING YOUR FIGHTS ARE TO ME!"
"Don't be ridiculous Max."
"I'm not being RIDICULOUS a daughter SHOULD NOT have to hear her parents fight every day. You know what I'm leaving. I'll see you guys later," Max said grabbing her keys and walking out the front door. She got into her car and started texting Lucas.

Max drove to Lucas' house and realized all the cars were gone. Then she remembered Erica had been telling her about the dance competition her parents were taking her to for the week. So that meant Max had the whole house to herself. She got the key from under the mat like Lucas said and went inside. It was around 8 o'clock so she heated some of the mac & cheese. Mrs. Sinclair always made the best food no matter what it was. Max then had a sweet tooth and decided that she'd make chocolate chip cookies before Lucas got home. Luckily, the Sinclair's always had ingredients in their house. While getting out the ingredients she found Mrs. Sinclair's recipes. There was one for chocolate chip cookies so she pulled it out. She got them in the oven around 9:30 so she had about 15 minutes till Lucas was home. Right, when she pulled them out of the oven Lucas walked through the door.
"Max? Are you still awake?" Lucas said loudly walking into the house.
"Yeah I'm in the kitchen," she says while taking the cookies off the baking sheets.
"Ooo whatcha makin?" Lucas says hugging her from behind.
"I got bored so I made some cookies."
"They look really good babe."
"Thanks, you can have one after you take a shower. No offense but you smell."
"Ugh ok," he kissed the top of her head and then headed upstairs to the bathroom. 15 minutes later Lucas came back down with his grey sweatpants on.
"I can smell your old spice," Max laughed.
"Well, it's better than sweat right?"
"Definitely. But I think you forgot something," she says pointing to his bare chest.
"Nah I don't sleep with shirts on."
"Yeah okay you just wanna show off your abs," Max teased as she gave him a cookie.
"Yeah maybe just a little," he said pulling her in from the waist and kissing her.
"Wanna play a game?" She asked.
"Sure but I'm playing music in the background."
"As long as it isn't shitty."
"Hey, I've got very good taste in music."
"I'll let you think that. Come on let's play 20 questions." They sat on the couch and starting quizzing each other. First, they were just little things but then the questions got deeper.
"If you could change one thing about your life what would it be?" Lucas asked Max. She thought about this one for a long time.
"I would say my parents' relationship but then I wouldn't have met you or the party. I think everything happens for a reason. So I guess I wouldn't change a thing even though it sucks sometimes."
"Good answer. Your turn."
"Hmmm. Oh, I got one. If you could go anywhere in the world right now for free but you could only take one thing with you where would you go? And what would you bring?"
"Uhhh I'd go to Bora Bora and stay in those cabanas on the water. And only take one thing?"
"Yep."
"I'd take you."
"I meant like your phone or something but I guess that works too," Max said smiling. They played a few more rounds and then got tired. Max jumped into Lucas's bed taking most of the blankets. Once Lucas laid down she laid on his chest while he stroked her hair. They both sat in comfortable silence until Lucas broke it.
"So what were you and your parents fighting about? If you don't mind me asking," he says holding her tighter.
"Well they were fighting like usual and I just got sick of it so I told them to be quiet. I was told to stay out of it but I just couldn't. Every single day they fight and no one should have to hear their parents yell at each other every day. I told them that and they told me I was being ridiculous. So I grabbed my keys and left," Max explained.
"I don't see how that's ridiculous. You're right I know if my parents fought every day I would've done the same thing you did," Lucas said comforting her.
"Thank you for letting me come over."
"You know you can come over anytime right? Erica and my parents love you. I don't even have to be home for you to stay here."
"I love you," Max genuinely says while looking her boyfriend in the eyes.
"I love you too," Lucas says back kissing her on the lips. They fell asleep in each other's arms and woke up to go to school the next day.

It had been four days since that night so it was Thursday night and Max had been staying at Lucas'.
His family wouldn't be home till Saturday and Max didn't want to hear her parents fight.

"I feel like I'd be something she'd wear right?" Lucas says as he's on a call with Erica.
"Yeah, but you should get it engraved!"
"With what though?"
"Idk maybe a word that describes her or something," Erica suggested.
"I know exactly what I'm gonna do thanks, Erica," Lucas says excitedly.
"You're welcome nerd," she says and hangs up.

After his call with Erica, he crawled into bed carefully not wanting to wake up Max who was already asleep. School has been kicking her ass these days. She's been working really hard on all her classes to make sure she has the grades for college. Junior year is the year that matters and she knew that. Lucas was so happy that they had an extra day of school off tomorrow so she could relax. He cuddled up next to her and fell asleep.

Lucas woke up before Max and he knew she would sleep for a while so he went out to go pick up something special and some breakfast. When he got back Max was still asleep until he opened up the food he got. She went downstairs to see what it was and they were her favorite waffles from the diner she loves. They sat down to eat and Lucas slid a box across the table.
"What's that?" Max says pointing to the box in front of her.
"That is for you."
"Lucas what did you do?" She says smiling.
"Open it."
She opened the box and there was a key with the word strength engraved on it. It was on a necklace.

"Now that is a key to this house. You can use it whenever you want. And you are no doubt about it the strongest person I know. So I thought it suited you."
"Why do you have to be so fucking cute sometimes," Max says with a tear sliding down her cheek.
"I love it thank you so much," she got up and hugged him.

That was the day Maxine Mayfield realized she had found the love of her life.
