It's been a month since Max and Dean broke up, and Lucas has grown 10x more protective of Max. Dean quickly got into a new relationship which caused some positives and negatives for his ex. He must've been too preoccupied to spread any gossip because the only rumor that floated around Hawkins High's halls was that the couple had a nasty breakup. While Max was glad there was no false information being spread around, it hurt to see him doing perfectly fine without her. Luckily, today was the last day before spring break, and El and Max told the boys they were having a girl night before she and Will left for vacation.
Lucas sat in his last-period class, ready to be free from school for a week. It seemed that the seconds were passing slower and slower every time he looked at the clock.
"Lucas," Dustin whispers, tapping him on the shoulder. "We're going to Mike's after school since the girls are doing their own thing. Meet by the bike rack." Lucas just nodded. He was excited to have a night away from the girls, but at the same time, he knew he would crave the redhead's proximity.
Finally, the bell rang, and every student and even some teachers seemed to be rushing out the door. The boys headed for Mike's house while the girls went to El's.
"AH, I can't wait to get some sun!" Mike said, tossing his backpack on the kitchen table.
"Wait, are you leaving too?" Lucas asked.
"Yeah, I didn't tell you guys? El invited me to go with them, so we're leaving tomorrow at 9 am."
"Damn. Guess it's just me, Dustin, and Max." Dustin raised his eyebrows at Lucas.
"Bro, do you not remember? I told you last night that my mom surprised me. I'm going to North Carolina tonight."
"Oh my god. I thought that was a dream," Everyone laughed as Lucas rubbed his forehead.
"Looks like it's just you and Max," Will nudged his elbow, smirking.
"Yeah, you can finally grow some balls and tell her how you feel," Dustin added.
"You guys know I can't do that. It has only been a month, and besides, what if she doesn't feel the same way? Then what? Does our friendship get ruined too? I don't want to lose that," The boys had been pushing Lucas to express his feelings, but he wanted to give her time.
"That's why I'm having El find out if Max has feelings for you or not tonight, so before we all leave, you'll know." Lucas gave Mike a thank you, and they all went into the basement.
Meanwhile, at the Byers/Hopper residence, El and Max are looking through magazines when El points something out.
"Hey, it's Ralph Maccio!" The girls laugh, remembering the time they talked about him in the summer of '85.
"And he is still hot," Max adds, and El agrees.
"Well, I'm glad you have your taste in boys back. I'm not going to lie, Dean, was not it." Max chuckled at her. She was right, and Max knew better than anyone that Dean was not it. "So, do you have eyes on anyone right now?" El smirked, trying to pry into her best friend's love life.
"Eh, not really," Max scrunched her nose.
"Okay, spill."
"What?" The redhead laughed.
"You scrunched your nose; you do that when you lie." El saw her friend's reaction and was praying she had feelings for that certain dark-skinned boy. "So, who is it?"
"No one!"
"You did it again! Just tell me, is it Lucas?"
"What? I don't like anyone! We're just friends, El," Max said, getting all serious.
