It was early December and Lucas finally got enough courage to ask out Max. He wanted to get to know her better. Luckily, she felt the same way.

After a few dates, they started hanging out all the time. So when Lucas asked if Max wanted to be his girlfriend she was so happy. Both of them and their friends spent Christmas Eve together trading gifts and making cookies. Max and Lucas were truly the happiest they have ever been, their friends could even tell.

By the end of the month, it had felt like they've known each other for years. Lucas knew everything about Max from her past to something as little as her favorite color. Max felt as if she knew more about Lucas than she did herself.

They took their relationship slow. There was no need to rush anything. When Mike had asked Lucas why he hasn't kissed her yet Lucas simply responded with "We're waiting for the right moment. We both decided that nothing needs to be rushed." Mike thought that was weird but he respected it.

For New Years' Eve, Lucas's family was going to visit his uncle's new rooftop restaurant in NYC. Since it was also a hotel his uncle told him he could bring whoever he wanted and he would provide the rooms for free. Of course, Lucas took him up on that offer. It would be a great way for Max to meet his family and their friends could tag along so it wouldn't be as much pressure.

"We would stay for 5 days. Food and the hotel rooms would be free! So are you guys in?" Lucas questioned the party while they were sitting in Mike's basement.
"HELL YEAH," they all responded. Of course, they had to talk with their parents first. Everyone was able to go except El but they were going to convince Hopper. By them I mean Max she was the only one who wasn't afraid of him.

"Come on chief! She's 17 let her live!" Max argued with Hop as the party stood behind her.
"Maxine for the last time no."
"You know they've already done it."
"What?"
"That's what you're afraid of right? El and Mike getting too 'cozy'," Max says as she raises her eyebrows and looks back at the couple.
"You're dead Wheeler."
"Dad stop. I'm 17! What exactly were you doing when you were 17?" El questioned. Hopper just stared at her knowing that he did the same thing. He let out a big sigh.
"Fine but you are to watch them. Got it?" He said pointing at Max.
"Got it. El and I were going to share a room anyway."
"Good," Hopper says pleased.
"Thank you, dad!" El said hugging her dad. Then they all went their separate ways to pack their bags.

Lucas then picked everyone up in his car. Max sitting in the passenger seat, Dustin and Will in the middle row, then El and Mike in the back.
"I can't believe you said that Max," Dustin laughed.
"I mean that's what it was gonna take so I just full sent it," Max says looking back at him.
"I almost got my head cut off dude not cool," Mike interrupts.
"I thought it was kinda funny. You could see the steam blowing out his ears," Lucas laughed looking into the rearview mirror to look at his friend.
"It was so embarrassing," El added.
"Trust me El I think the redness in his face showed he was equally embarrassed," Will said. After that their conversations turned into a sing-along. The music was blaring so loud from the radio you could hear it outside the car. Soon enough 2 hours had passed.
"Ok we're here," Lucas says pulling into the car garage. It was the 28th which meant that they were staying till the 1st of January. They were greeted by Lucas' uncle in the lobby and got shown their rooms.

They all unpacked with everyone having to share a room. Max with El, Lucas with Mike, and Dustin with Will. For the next few days, they were out exploring the city. Going shopping, visiting parks, and just goofing around. At 2 am they all snuck together and went to the floor below them. They decided that everyone would be at a separate door and knock as loud as they could.
"3...2...1!" Lucas yelled and they all knocked and ran back up the stairs. With all the fun they were having days went by fast.

It was already New Year's Eve and they were all getting ready for the party on the rooftop. Both of the girls wearing dresses and the guys wearing button-up shirts. It was about 7 o'clock when they went up to the roof.
"Well don't you boys look snazzy," Max teased as she straightened Lucas's shirt collar.
"You don't look too bad yourself," Lucas said back. Once it was 8 o'clock everyone was there. Lucas decided that now was the time to introduce Max to his grandma.
"Max this is my grandma and grandma this is Max. My girlfriend," Lucas said introducing them to each other.
"Ohh Max honey Lucas has talked so much about you! I'm so glad we finally get to meet!" His grandma said hugging Max.
"It's so nice to meet you too! And I have to say your Christmas cookie recipes are to die for!"
"You can bake?!" Grandma excitedly replies.
"Yeah, I've loved baking and cooking since I was a kid."
"Oh then we've got lots to talk about come on honey," Lucas' grandma responds pulling Max to a table to talk. Max was happy that his grandma wanted to talk to her. She knew how close Lucas and his grandma were and she could see why. When his grandma pulled Max to talk more, that made Lucas a little worried. So he went and talked to Will to distract his nerves. He felt relieved when he peered over at them and they were laughing. They talked for a good hour maybe 2. His grandma introduced her to other relatives and she went and talked with them. Lucas turned around when he was tapped on the shoulder.
"You've got a good one Lucas," His grandma said as they both looked at Max as she was laughing with his Aunt.
"I know," Lucas responds smiling.
"You better not hurt her. I might already like her more than you," she teased and Lucas laughed.
"I don't plan on it. She already means the world to me and we've only been dating for a few weeks."
"A FEW WEEKS?" His grandma says surprised.
"Yeah, I haven't even kissed her yet."
"Well, you guys look like you've been with each other for years just by the way you talk to one another."
"It feels that way too," he says happily.
"Well don't lose this one. Especially when you hit a bump in the road that's when you'll need her most."
"Thanks, Grandma," Lucas' says and hugs her. He eventually found his way back to Max.
"Lucas I love your family," Max says genuinely.
"They love you too. But I hope they weren't too annoying."
"Nooo, they were so kind and genuine. I wish my family was like this," Max says a little sad at the end. Lucas knows her family problems and felt a little bad that she never got to experience what he has with his family.
"Well maybe one day they can be your family too," Lucas says smiling at her. Max smirked and gave him a tight hug.

Soon enough everyone was gathered around watching the countdown. All the couples were in each other's arms waiting for the ball to drop.
"3...2...1! Happy New Year!" Everyone says. Lucas decided that this was his time. He put his hands on Max's waist and pulled her in. She put her arms around his neck and once their lips met all the fireworks went off. As they kissed he slowly dipped her not letting their lips depart from one another. He brought her back and they slowly disconnected. Staring into each other's eyes Lucas smiles and says "Ready for a whole year of this?"
"Definitely," she responds and snuggles up close to him. Lucas grabbed a blanket and put it around them as they watched the fireworks go off in the sky.
